Turkey’s tourism ministry announced on the 15th that Çameli, in Denizli province, has been designated a new Cittaslow (‘‘slow city’’), bringing the country’s total to 27. The designation, made during this year’s international Slow City Congress held in Wando, South Jeolla (Jeollanam-do), highlights Çameli’s clean nature—pine forests, clear ponds—and traditional rural lifestyle about 110 km south of the famous Pamukkale. The village, whose name means “land of pines,” offers hiking and cycling trails, paragliding events, and opportunities to try local organic dishes and handicrafts; signature foods include Çameli beans and trout dishes. Turkey’s Cittaslow movement began in Seferihisar, İzmir, in 2009 and has since spread across multiple provinces.
