Exploring East Taihang Mountains: China’s ‘Grand Canyon’ Walkways and WondersCreatrip Team
2 months ago
Dongtaihang (East Taihang) in Hebei province is likened to the “Grand Canyon” of the East, offering dramatic red cliffs, long cliffside trails and skywalks. A roughly 14 km loop from the scenic parking area takes about five hours and includes a cable car, glass walkways, cliff-hugging plank paths (jando), elevators, and viewpoints such as Yongtouya (Dragon Head Cliff), the glass promenade, and the 100 m artificial waterfall “Tianpu.” Notable formations include the freestanding stone pillar Taixingzhu (called “Taixing Column” or “candle rock”) and the arch-like rock gate Yehamun (“How/What gate”) carved into a cliff. The route passes attractions named Lianhua Waterfall, Beihigh Peak (Beigao Peak), Tianjing Lake, and several scenic bridges and caves. The terrain is rugged and awe-inspiring, with many photo spots and cultural references to Chinese history along the way. Transportation is via Handan or nearby Shijiazhuang airports; some organized tour departures (charter flights) are planned for April. (jando: narrow cliffside walkway), (Yehamun: rock gate with the characters “如何”), (Taixingzhu: freestanding stone pillar)
