Hongcheon, a region with a tumultuous history during the late Joseon Dynasty and Japanese occupation, is recognized for its significant historical events, such as the Donghak Peasant Revolution and the March 1st Movement. Key historical sites include the Donghak Park in Pungam-ri, where each year on October 23rd, a memorial ceremony is held to honor the sacrifice of those who resisted against foreign and domestic oppression in 1894. Also notable is the Kimimanse Park, commemorating the 1919 March 1st Movement for Korean independence, where eight leaders heroically sacrificed their lives.
