The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases has exceeded 9,000 in Korea, and the recovery rate of more than 50% is somewhat reassuring. Korea saw another amazing case of fighting the disease when a 97-year-old woman recovered in just 12 days.

As of 8pm today (29th), there have been 154 deaths in South Korea, with an overall mortality rate of 1.61%.

Among them, the highest number of incurable cases is patients of over 80 years of age, and the mortality rate is the highest, reaching 18%. On March 13, a 97-year-old woman, Hwang YoungJu (황영주), was diagnosed with a new type of coronavirus in Gyeongsangbuk-do, the hardest-hit area of the epidemic, setting a record age of infections in the nation.

It is speculated that she was infected at an Elderly Protection Center. Her 73-year-old son said that his mother is usually very happy at the Elderly Protection Center, and the staff there treat her with great care. So after confirming the infection, both he and the director of the center burst into tears. In order to prevent a possible shortage of medical resources, the government of Gyeongbuk sent her to Pohang Hospital for centralized treatment since she was the oldest person to get infected.

Fortunately, Mrs. Hwang had no other symptoms other than a low fever. For safety reasons, after 12 days of quarantine and treatment, she was released.

Mrs Hwang expressed her gratitude through her son after being discharged from the hospital. She said: "I was able to recover because I truly believed that I could go back to my normal happy life." Mrs. Hwang has become the oldest person to recover in South Korea. Overcoming the 18% mortality rate in Korea for seniors aged 80 years or older, Mrs. Hwang’s epidemic resistance can be seen as a miracle.
