Eggslut | Starfield COEX
A New Player Of Korea's Egg Sandwich Scene Is Here And It's Winning Big With Crazy Lineups And Social Media Presence
Even before its official opening on July 10th, Eggslut was blowing up on social media in Korea for its delicate American egg sandwiches and unique sides. Since its opening, it's been the busiest spot at the Starfield COEX Mall with endless queues and the dining area bustling with patrons devouring their eggy goodness. We made our way over to see what the hype was about and if the food was actually worth waiting hours for.
We went at around 10 am on a weekday. We were surprised that a lineup had already formed and to see their tables filled with customers.
Lucky for us, we didn't wait terribly long. After about 20 minutes of queuing up and filling out a personal information form (which has become a norm among venues and businesses ever since the pandemic), we were shown inside.
The kitchen staff was moving about busily, flipping and creating shiny, fluffy sandwiches within seconds.
To the side of the counter where customers order, there was a long list of special goods on sale. Selling housemade goods has become a trend in Korea and we could see that Eggslut was localizing to their finest.
After you are done ordering, you'll be given a bell which lights up and vibrates once your food is ready. Again, localization at its best!
While waiting for our food to get ready, we checked out the handwashing station. Once it senses a movement, it dispenses water, soap, water again, then paper towel in order. Because 'un-tact' objects (things that don't require physical contact) have become a thing in Korea since the pandemic, this was a smart little 'un-tact' gadget that ensured a more hygienic environment in a clever way.
The Food
After a 15-minute wait, the food was ready!
Each sandwich comes wrapped in a cute square-shaped bag that holds it together.
Fairfax (₩7,800)
This Eggslut signature featuring scrambled eggs, mild cheddar cheese, caramelized onions and sriracha mayo. The cloudy scrambled eggs are especially flavourful. Plus, you can never go wrong with sriracha mayo, right?
Sausage, Egg & Cheese (₩9,300)
This classic breakfast sandwich combination was overall decent with creamy, melted cheese and egg that add a tender texture to the otherwise dense sausage. Honestly, it didn't have a special little kick to justify the rather steep price tag.
The Slut (₩6,800)
This dish comes in an adorable mason jar with a sous vide coddled egg over potato puree, finished with chives and grey salt on top. Dip the crispy baguette into the jar to scoop it up. The flavours and softness of the egg and potato puree go superbly with the crunchy baguette.
There are separate drawers to leave plates, cups, bottles and garbage at the end of the meal, but it wasn't implemented yet. An employee was designated with cleaning out the trays so we simply handed ours over to her.
How Are Locals Enjoying It?
On NAVER, Korea's most influential online platform, their average rating is 4.16, an average of 949 ratings. However, on KAKAO, another prominent platform in the nation, their average is 1.9 from 32 ratings.
Some of the positive reviews read as below:
"It would've been nice to have tried them in LA. Instead, I got a taste in Seoul. The scrambled eggs were very soft. Many described its texture as that of a cotton candy and I could feel it for myself. I took half a star off because it was salty and greasy."
"You've got to try Eggslut. It tastes healthy and clean."
"We arrived at 11:30 and waited 5-10 minutes to get in. We ordered Eggslut, Fairfax, Fairfax with avocado and bacon, Orange Juice and Coke. Everything was tasty but it was definitely greasy. Pairing Coke with burgers is the right thing to do!"
Some of the not-so-forgiving reviews are as below:
"A place with delicious coke. Everything else is rotten. SPC (Eggslut's affiliate in Korea) sucks and I'm boycotting them."
"Keeps saying it's from LA. It tastes like s**t. I want my ₩30,000 (approx. 25 USD) back. I only stopped by because I was close by, but even if it was right in front of my house, I wouldn't go. Go to Cr**** Cheeseburger, it's a hundred times better. Please. If you're in line and looking at this review, just know that this will be your future."
"I was starving but even then it wasn't tasty. E** D*** is muuuch better. Charging so much for these flavours. A mix of bacon and eggs is hard to fail, but this place managed to do just that. The bread sucks and is not seasoned properly. Smells terrible too. I give it one star from the handwashing machine. I want to curse. I just had it and I'm so annoyed. The picture looks better than actuality."
Is It Worth The Wait?
No, it's not. Personally, I'm in between the positive reviews and the not-so-forgiving reviews. If it's something accessible right away, then I'll probably consider stopping by for a quick bite. But waiting for hours to get my hands on their sandwiches? We've got better things to do.
Based on the local reviews, it seems that it'll just be a matter of time before the hype dies down. When it does, maybe I'll drop by to try their Gaucho.
