What Do Koreans Look For In A Spouse? What Makes A Marriage Happen In Korea? A Closer Look At Criteria Including Assets, Appearance, Education, Occupation And More.
Duo, the largest matchmaking company in Korea, announced the result of a survey on the ideal spouse material.
The subjects were 500 unmarried men and 500 unmarried women aged between 25 to 39.

Korean Women Look For:
- Height: 178.5cm
- Income: ₩57.5 million / year
- Assets: ₩278 million
- Age: 1.8 years older
- Education Level: University graduate or above
- Occupation: Government Official / Public Servant
- Important Criteria: Personality > Values > Financial Ability
Korean Men Look For:
- Height: 163.4cm
- Income: ₩43.3 million / year
- Savings: ₩198 million
- Age: 2.6 years younger
- Education Level: University graduate or above
- Occupation: Government Official / Public Servant
- Important Criteria: Personality > Values > Appearance
IDEAL HEIGHT
The majority of men answered that height is not important (59.4%). However, 33.6% of women answered that a man should be 175cm-180cm tall. The ideal average heights of men and women are 178.5cm and 163.4cm respectively.
ANNUAL INCOME
35.8% of men answered that the ideal income of a spouse is 30-40 million won, while men's ideal income was 40-50 million won (23.6% of responses).
27.8% of men and 13.6% of women answered that income is not an important factor.
ASSETS
43.4% of men and 30.6% of women answered that premarital assets are negligible.
However, there were also about 13.8% of men and 16.8% of women who answered that their spouse should have assets worth 100-150 million won.
On average, women want their partner to have 278 million won in assets and men 198 million won.
AGE DIFFERENCE
About 31.2% of men and 23.4% of women said that age is not an important factor, the largest responses from both genders.
Men wanted their spouse to be: The same age (22.8%), 3-4 years younger (15.2%) and 1-2 years younger (11.0%).
Women wanted their spouse to be: 3-4 years older (20.2%), the same age (19.6%) and 1-2 years older (14.2%).
EDUCATION
The majority of men (51.4%) and women (63.6%) wanted their partner to have a bachelor's degree or more.
About 33.0% of men and 23.6% of women responded with, 'Not important'.
OCCUPATION

Government official and public servant (men 36.7%, women 40.8%) and general office worker (men 36.4%, women 40.8%) took over most of the votes.
Men also chose teacher (23.0%), nurse and other related medical professions (16.6%) and service worker (14.4%) for their spouse's ideal occupations.
Women responded with doctor / pharmacist (16.4%), accountant / patent attorney / tax accountant (15.8%) and engineering / information and communications (15.8%) as their partner's ideal occupations.
TOP CRITERIA

Men and women both chose personality (73.4% and 72.4% respectively) as the most important factor, followed by values (55.8% and 58.2%).
A lot of men also responded with appearance (47.6%), hobby / interests (33.8%).
Many women responded with financial ability (39.4%) and family background (25.4%).
AGE & MARRIAGE PLANS

Respondents said the ideal ages for men and women to get married were 32.9 and 32.4 respectively.
Marriage plans were at 33.9 for men and 32.5 for women.
50.6% of men and women answered that marriage is not a must.
