Seoul City Bike | Guide to Ddareungi (따릉이)
Let's Go For a Bike Ride Along Han River! Explore Seoul with City Bike!
In Seoul, there are many types of public transportation available. While subway and bus are quite popular, another popular mode is bicycle.
Seoul's official bike rental service, Ddareungi (따릉이) is an unmanned rental system that can be conveniently used anywhere, anytime by anyone. One of the experiences that everyone in Korea should have is riding a bike along Han River.
Some might have already tried renting a public bike, but couldn't due to the language barrier of the instructions. This guide will work to alleviate all complications during the bike rental process so you can take on the city by bike, whenever you like.
How to Use the City Bike Ddareungi (따릉이)
Step 1: Download and install the Ddareungi (따릉이) app on your phone!
Go to the app store and find "따릉이" or "Seoul Public Bike". It is available both on iOS and Android.
Step 2: Register
You can register/login with Naver, Facebook, or a Kakao account very easily. Most find Kakao the most convenient option since KakaoPay is available to use with the app.
If you are visiting Korea for a short time and don't want to register, you can use the service for non-members.
After you finish your registration, go to the 'Personal Information' page (회원 정보 관리) and select 'Password Registration/Change' (대여비밀번호 등록/변경).
Step 3: Purchase a pass
This is an important step!
You will have to buy a pass before you use a bicycle. Go to 'Buy Pass' (이용권 구매) and select the plan that fits you the most. There are many options to accommodate various levels of usage such as one-time passes, weekly, monthly, or even an annual pass. The price varies depending on which pass you purchase.
1 Hour Rental (KRW)
2 Hour Rental (KRW)
6 Month Pass
Note: If you go beyond the hours that you have selected, you will get charged an additional 200 KRW for the first 5 minutes of overuse, and 400 KRW past 6 minutes of overuse. To avoid additional charges, visit the closest station and park your bike, and re-rent it again for another hour or two save money. You can pay for your pass with debit or credit card as well as with PAYCO and KakaoPay.
Step 4: Get the bike
After you make the payment, find the closest location with rental bikes available on the map.
There are two types of Ddareungi available: LCD bikes and QR bikes. LCD bikes are the originals, and the QR bikes are the newer, better and lighter versions. You can easily rent the bikes following these steps:
1) LCD Bikes
Go on the app and select which one you would like to rent (대여).
For instance, if you click on the number 17 on the screen and select 대여하기 for the LCD bike section, you will be able to select a bike on the next page. Once you've selected a bike, continue by clicking 대여.
Next, press the power button below the screen for 2 seconds and enter the 4-digit password that you created in step 2. The bike will automatically unlock after!
2) QR Bikes
This one is a lot simpler than the previous one.
Once you open the app, select 'rent/대여' and scan the QR code just below the seat. The lock will automatically open after.
Step 5: Returning the bike
After riding the LCD bikes, place your bike back into the rack and secure the lock into its place.
If the racks are full when you return, connect your bike to another docked bike by securing its supplementary lock (white lock) to yours.
For QR bikes, leave your bike at the designated parking area, and slide the lock to make sure the bike is secure.
Note: The app is available in both Korean and English. You can adjust the height of the seat as you wish. Also, make sure you receive a notification message from Ddareungi before you walk away. If you don't receive anything, that means your return wasn't successful and you may get charged overuse fees. If you are unable to successfully return the bike, please contact the customer service number.
Additional Information on Ddareungi
1. How can non-members ride Ddareungi?
Go on the app, choose 'Non-Member'(비회원), and buy the pass first.
When you are making the payment, don't forget to enter your phone number so that you can receive the 8-digit rental code to enter to ride the bike.
Then, press the home button on the screen for 2 seconds, enter the first 4 digits of the code, then the last 4 digits.
2. Using the Self-Locking feature.
You don't have to ride you bike for one hour straight. You can also lock and secure the bike at any time during your ride.
Set the bike besides any locked bike at the rack and grab the wire on the left-hand side of the locked bike. Once you come back, enter the 4-digit password you've created (or the first 4 digits of the code for non-members).
3. How to return the bike when there is no space available.
From time to time, you might encounter a situation when there is no space available for you to park, but no worries.
You can park your bike on the left side of another bike that is parked already. Take the wire from the other bike and connect it to yours, then wait for the screen to show that your return was successful. When you receive a return message from Ddareungi, you are good to go. Watch the video above to better understand the process of locking your bike to another!
4. How can I find a bike path?
The bicycle paths are marked in red on the road, so you can easily find it! But what are some ways to find out where it is before renting a bike?
1) Using the bike path map.
Source: Seoul Website
The solid red lines are bicycle roads and the dotted red lines are bicycle lanes! The green line is a bicycle and pedestrian road, and the yellow line is a bicycle priority road. Regardless of the color of the line, roads marked with any of these lines are roads where bicycles can travel.
If you click the link under the map, you can find the location of other facilities, such as bike parking lots, storage areas, and repair shops!
2) Using Google Maps.
If you're using Google Maps, enter your starting and ending location and select the bicycle icon to find the best bike path! Please note that you can't travel on roads without bike lanes.
When it finally hits Spring in Korea, it becomes the perfect time to go on a bike ride with your friends and family. Enjoy the nice weather and take in the scenery on one of Seoul's bikes. You won't regret it! 😉
