Deungchon Shabu Kalguksu is one of the most liked noodle soup restaurants in Korea with over 250 branches. They even have a location in Vietnam!
Let me break down the meaning of its name. Deungchon is the area in which this food came about, shabu (usually called Shabu-Shabu) is a thinly sliced meat and vegetables boiled in a hot pot, kalguksu is hand-chopped noodles. At this restaurant, you can enjoy all of these and finish it off with fried rice. Now that could make your belly pop!

I visited Deungchon Shabu Kalguksu near Hoegi Station. They had only 3 items on the menu. Naengmyeon (cold noodles), kongguksu (soy milk noodle soup) and a set menu that includes shabu, spicy mushroom kalguksu, vegetables and bokkeumbap (fried rice). But for the set menu, you have to order 2 portions or more, and it's ₩10,000 per person.

It's quite easy to order here. If there are 4 people, just say '4 sets please' to the waiter, and they will prepare the food right away. When the soup starts to boil, add the meat.

The soup base was just a little spicy, but I think everyone can handle this level of spiciness. They give you a dish with soy sauce and wasabi. You dip your meat and vegetables in the sauce, and it provides that extra kick to the flavour. I love dipping it in this sauce and always ask for more as it gets diluted. The meat, mushroom, vegetables and soup are blended truly well, and gives excellent texture and taste.

Now for the noodle to be added! When you have nearly finished your meat and vegetables, add the noodle for about 4 to 5 minute in the boiling soup.

One last thing. You could be full by now but to complete this meal, you have to finish it with bokkeumbap. Most restaurants will do this part for you so when you finish eating, just call the waiter and tell them you would like to have the bokkeumbap.
If they don't do it for you, then it's quite simple. Just pour out the remaining soup in the pot, leave about 10 spoonfuls of soup, add the bokkeumbap ingredients and stir. Then spread the rice in the pot (like the picture above) and leave it for 3 minutes. Bon appetit!
Since Deungchon Shabu Kalguksu is all over Korea just type their name (등촌샤브칼국수) in Naver or Google and you will be able to find the one near you.
