Our Visit
We visited Baekje Samgyetang, a restaurant with 50 years of history. You can feel the traditional atmosphere from the front door.
There are articles about the restaurant from various countries, and autographs of celebrities on the wall. Not just Korean celebrities, but there are Chinese and Japanese celebrities' autographs! It really is a global gourmet establishment.
We visited the restaurant at 3 PM which is normally the most unbusy hour for most restaurants. However, as you can see, there are lots of customers enjoying their meal!
At lunch or dinner time, you have to wait in lines to get in. Try to avoid peak hours if possible!
The restaurant is on the first floor which looks simple and neat. It's not the most modern interior but gives the place a calm and traditional atmosphere.
It tells you about the owner of the place! Old and peaceful, yet clean and neat. It makes you feel at peace just by its appearance.
There are large tables for customers that come in groups.
These are Baekjae Samgyetang's best menu items! We ordered what the manager recommended us to have.
Wild Ginseng Samgyetang (산삼배양근삼계탕), Wild Ginseng Silkie Chicken Soup (산삼배양근 오골계탕), Chicken Gizzard (닭똥집), Chicken Feet (닭발편육)... and Ginseng Wine.
The secret to the taste of Baekje Samgyetang is the freshness of the ingredients! The owner brings chicken directly from the farm(directly managed) on the day! Even the ginseng wine, kimchi, and all the dishes are freshly cooked on the day. All foods are made with sincerity and effort!
While the dishes are being prepared, we got our Ginseng Wine. It has a distinctive color and the aroma of the ginseng wine was exquisite. The strong ginseng scent tells that they put a whole lot of ginseng.
TIP! If you order a samgyetang menu, you get a free cup of Ginseng Wine! If you like the taste of it, order a bottle and you won't be disappointed.
At last! We got our Samgyetang and Silkie Chicken Soup. The steaming hot chickens looked really delicious.
All chicken menus are served in a stone pot so you can enjoy the food hot until the very end.
The main menu comes with seasoned garlic, kimchi, and kkakdugi.
Spicy seasoned garlic was a first for me, even as a local. For me, someone who loves to eat K-BBQ with garlic, it tasted really nice!
Some of you might not have seen Silkie Chicken before. Silkie chicken is a breed of chicken that is black to its bone. In ancient Korea, it was known as medicine.
It tastes similar to ordinary chicken, but it is more nutritious.
We ordered the "Wild Ginseng" Samgyetang and Silkie Chicken Soup, so there is wild ginseng root on top of our pot.
The difference between Samgyetang and Wild Ginseng Samgyetang is in the ginseng root. Even though it is just one ingredient, it makes the food much more healthier!
All samgyetang dishes have 6-year-old ginseng in them. You can fish them out during your meal but don't throw them away! It may be bitter but it's good for your health(and it's expensive)!
Besides Samgyetang, there were lots of other chicken items on the menu. Out of this menu, I would recommend the "Chicken Gizzard" and "Chicken Feet"!
Since all chickens are fresh, the chicken gizzard had a good chew. It was especially good to eat with the ginseng wine. If you are going to try Chicken Gizzard, do order it with ginseng wine!
Some people don't eat chicken feet because they look gross, but there are lots of chicken feet lovers in Korea.
These chicken feet are sliced up, so it doesn't look or feel gross. If you haven't tried them before because of their appearance, this is for you! Try them with the special sauce of Baekje Samgyetang.
