Samcheongdong | Traditional Korean Crab at Byeog-Odong
No MSG added! Savoury crab made with housemade soy sauce
Hello everyone! This is Creatrip, a group of Korean travel experts! When we visited this restaurant, we were greeted by the owner at the front door. She told us proudly that all the sauces here, including gochujang (red pepper paste), ganjang (soy sauce) and doenjang (fermented soybean paste), are housemade. Additionally, she mentioned that there are over 12 ingredients in the soy sauce crab, including dates, ginger chunks, kelp, angelica, and housemade soy sauce.
Let's go take a look at what these dishes look like!

Our Review
Korean food inside Korean architecture! Looking at Hanok architecture in the Insadong area is surely a magnificent experience.
The front door made me feel like entering a Korean grandma's house.
The large windows that look out to the small garden are closed in winter but open in other seasons, letting the breeze into the room.
Rooms are available to provide privacy.
I liked that every corner of this restaurant had traditional Korean details to it.
The highlight of this place is the backyard filled with jangdokdae, where condiments of crocks were placed outside for fermentation and ageing!
This jangdokdae is where all the housemade gochujang, doenjang and ganjang are placed. The time and effort it must have taken to make these sauces in-house is just magnificent.
Let's take a look at the food now. The two specialties here are soy sauce crab and the Korean table set. We ordered the two dishes to see how they are.
Soy sauce crab is accompanied by two types of kimchi (cabbage kimchi, radish kimchi), lots of vegetable-based side dishes, pickled anchovies, doenjang soup, and rice. You can get free refills on all the side dishes served on the dark plates in the picture too! 😋
Look at the crab full of meat and eggs! I could tell from the texture of the meat that they used high-quality crab. The crab in the soy sauce crab platter tasted much better than the crab included in the Korean table set so I asked the owner about it. The owner said all the crab is cooked the same way in the same sauces but the crab used in the soy sauce crab platter is premium and more expensive.
So generous! Most Korean table sets in Korea are super generous but it's difficult to find a place where each and every side dish tastes great. All the side dishes at Byeog-Odong tasted genuine and I felt like I could finish an entire bowl of rice just with the side dishes!
The Korean table set includes japchae, bulgogi, soy sauce crab, seasoned skate, buchimgae (pancake), fish, doenjang jjigae (soybean stew). Other side dishes served are the same as the soy sauce crab.
Byeog-Odong specialty soy sauce crab.
Sweet and salty bulgogi
Japchae - glossy glass noodles
Doenjang jjigae served in a hot stone pot.
Buchimgae
You might wonder, "Why should I get the soy sauce crab when the other one has a lot more variety PLUS the crab?" But I must say, these two platters are different. I would suggest Korean table set to those who want to try a little bit of every traditional Korean dish. I recommend soy sauce crab to those who want to try premium quality Korean crab.
❄ A Frozen-themed cafe had just opened up across the restaurant. Fill up on traditional Korean food and take a look around the cafe afterward!
