Insadong Food | Seoul Wonjo Agujjim: Review
You can easily recognize the restaurant from afar by the owner ajumma's face on the signboard.
The owner is really kind and generous, and makes you feel right at home once you enter the restaurant.
The interior of the restaurant is painted in a sky blue tone that gives off a very clean vibe. There are spacious seats for large groups, as well as private seats
Seoul Wonjo Agujjim is loved by Korean locals and foreigners alike. It's so famous that a Taiwanese singer also dropped by and had a meal here!
It's close to Insadong, Jongno 3-ga, and Anguk, meaning it's nearby no matter where you're visiting.
Once you are seated, you will be served the banchan (side dishes). There are so many side dishes, including acorn jelly, green laver, spinach, fruit salad, and dongchimi (radish water kimchi). The acorn jelly was particularly delicious, with a very springy texture!
The dongchimi is sweet and sour, and it pairs well with agujjim as it soothes your mouth from the spicy flavor.
Pour some soy sauce on to a small empty plate so that you can have your seafood or agujjim with it. The green wasabi is made from horseradish, and it has a pungent flavor similar to that of mustard. It helps neutralize the main dish's fishy smell. If you don't like hot flavors, drop the wasabi; if you enjoy hot, pungent flavors, mix your soy sauce with some wasabi!
The restaurant also sells other various dishes like haemultang (spicy seafood stew), kkotgejjim (steamed crab), kkotgetang (spicy crab stew), and agutang (spicy monkfish stew).
I ordered haemuljjim (spicy braised seafood) and kkotgejjim.
Even though I ordered small portions, the dishes were still in sizable portions, enough to feed 2 - 3 people. If you can't eat spicy food, remember to ask to make your dish less spicy when ordering!
Just show them this sentence: "안 맵게 해주세요."
Haemuljjim has many assorted seafoods inside, such as shrimp, conch, octopus, crab, and roe, making it a great choice if you want to enjoy a variety of different seafoods.
On top of the haemuljjim, there is a large octopus, which you should cut in bite sized before eating.
Kkotgaejjim has lots of fleshy, rich crabs, so if you really want to eat lots of crab, this is the choice for you.
If you want a warm and spicy broth, you can order haemultang, kkotgetang, or agutang. The mushrooms and vegetables in the stew make the broth taste even richer.
The flavor of bean sprouts, octopus, and roe in one bite is absolutely phenomenal!
If you're visiting Insadong, make sure to drop by Nakwondong Agujjim Street and enjoy delicious braised seafood!
