1. Large supermarkets rid of self-packing stations.
Large supermarkets in Korea including Lotte Mart, Emart, Homeplus and Nonghyup are required to terminate their self-packing stations due to environmental issues. It was initially planned to be terminated on November 2019, but due to a massive amount of complaints, the date of execution was pushed back to January 1, 2020.
2. Cosmetic Ingredient Labeling
Starting 2020, cosmetic products including ones for children and toddlers, are required to have labelling on them. In their advertisement, they must indicate contents of preservatives, fragrant materials and contents that may cause allergies. Those of you who are familiar with Korean cosmetics and ingredients can be even more informed now when shopping for cosmetics.
3. Korean Passport Changes Colour
Starting 2020, general Korean passports will be light navy in colour. Next time you're at the airport, see if you can spot any of the new passports.
4. Liquor Bottles Forbidden to Display Images of Endorsing Celebrities
From 2020, new laws on advertisements will be implemented for the purpose of building healthy mentalities of citizens. For example, liquor bottles cannot display images of representing celebrities, advertisements cannot show sounds of drinking, reshaping advertisements on Korean liquors.
5. Minimum Wage Raise
The minimum hourly wage went up by 2.9% in 2020, raising it to ₩8,590. If any of you guys are coming to Korea on working holidays or looking for part-time jobs while studying this year, please remember this minimum wage!
In addition to the new regulations mentioned above, other interesting new ones include change of ID card materials, the issuance of mobile version of driver's license, and the automatic deposit and withdrawal service charge.

1. Usage of Plastic Bag Prohibited
Implemented on January 1, 2019, all supermarkets and bakeries were prohibited from packing purchases in plastic bags! Remember to bring an eco bag when you go grocery shopping. If you are really in need of a bag, you can pay for one at the store.
2. Beverage Ban on Buses
Before the implementation, bringing beverages on the subway and buses was permitted, but now hand-carried beverages and unpacked food are not allowed on buses.
Unopened beverages are permitted but opened snacks including ice cream and popcorn are also not permitted.
3. Disposable Cups Banned from In-Store Uses
Cafes cannot provide beverages in disposable cups if you are planning on drinking them there. They must be served in glasses or mugs, and you can easily see paper straws. Environmental awareness in Korea has increased a lot.
