'Cheonggiwa Galbi' | Why We Recommend It
- The owner, with over 20 years of experience, personally trims and grills the meat for you. Everything is done by hand, no machines.
- Unlike most places that use standard charcoal briquettes, 'Cheonggiwa Galbi' has a separate charcoal area and insists on using only high-quality natural charcoal.
- They use fresh pork (Grade 1 or higher) and premium-grade hanwoo. Since the meat quality is excellent, it does not need additional aging.
- Their signature is a light, dye-free marinade. It is not heavily seasoned to bring out the meat’s natural flavor, so it does not burn easily and it is not overly sweet or salty. Delicious and wholesome!
- It is just a 5-minute walk from Hongik Univ. Station. Located on the first floor, it also has terrace seating, so on nice days you can enjoy your meal in an open, airy setting, another big plus!
'Cheonggiwa Galbi' | Our Visit

Today, Our editor visited 'Cheonggiwa Galbi', a traditional charcoal grill restaurant in Hongdae.
True to its name, 'Cheonggiwa', the entrance already feels richly traditional, it got us excited before we even stepped inside.
It is located on the first floor along a main road, making it the perfect spot to naturally drop by after shopping in Hongdae and wrap up the day with authentic Korean charcoal BBQ.
Now, let us show you why you should visit 'Cheonggiwa Galbi'.
| Real charcoal, carefully managed in-house
One of the biggest highlights of 'Cheonggiwa Galbi' is its traditional charcoal direct-fire grilling (charcoal grill).
While many BBQ restaurants use gas or chemical fuels, this place has a separate charcoal area outside the restaurant and sticks to natural charcoal only.
Meat grilled over natural charcoal has a different heat and aroma, giving it a subtle smoky flavor that seeps in naturally. If you want to properly experience traditional Korean BBQ, one bite is all it takes to understand how big this difference is!
| Meat trimmed by hand only

'Cheonggiwa Galbi' trims every cut of meat by hand, one by one. No machines are used.
The owner and staff, each with over 20 years of experience, trim it themselves and grill it for you as well. The owner emphasized just three keywords.
Handmade, by hand, purity.
You could really feel the owner’s philosophy in every bite, not trying to maximize profit, but putting customer satisfaction first.
| Trustworthy meat, check the certificates yourself
'Cheonggiwa Galbi' does not just claim they use “good meat.” You can actually check the meat certificates in the restaurant.
They use domestic hanwoo rated 1++, and everything is transparently provided, including origin, slaughter details, and traceability number.
So even first-time visitors can enjoy their meal without worrying, “Where is this meat from?”
Many restaurants say they use quality meat, but not many openly share information that customers can verify for themselves.
| Menu Introduction ⭐️

Once you sit down, they first bring out a complimentary basic spread!
From the owner’s signature green onion sauce to fresh kimchi salad (geotjeori), kimchi, cucumber, scallion salad, garlic, and lettuce.
Every single side dish was better than expected. Just looking at the basic setup, you can tell how much care goes into this place.
Our editor ordered four items, hanwoo fresh beef ribs, marinated beef ribs, marinated pork ribs, and fresh samgyeopsal (pork belly).
For sides, we also added doenjang-jjigae, bibim naengmyeon, and mul naengmyeon (chilled noodle soup).
The owner recommended this order for the best experience, hanwoo fresh beef ribs → marinated beef ribs → marinated pork ribs → fresh samgyeopsal. Starting light and gradually moving into richer flavors, definitely try it in this order!

First, they grill the hanwoo fresh beef ribs for you.

Because it is not marinated, you can really taste the meat’s natural flavor, which we loved.

hanwoo fresh beef ribs, the owner’s best way to enjoy them!

1. First, dip it in salt and enjoy the pure flavor of top-grade hanwoo

2. Then, it tastes even better with lettuce geotjeori (fresh kimchi salad).
Our editor visited around 4 PM, and since it was relatively quiet, the owner, with over 20 years of experience, grilled everything for us personally.
As expected, the hanwoo fresh beef ribs just melted in our mouths.
We will also share four ways the owner confidently recommends enjoying the ribs!

First, dip the marinated beef ribs and marinated pork ribs generously into the owner’s special green onion sauce. The nutty richness of the meat and the aroma of the scallion sauce come together for an even deeper flavor.

Second, place the meat and green onion on a spoonful of rice and eat it in one bite, it is truly outstanding. You can really feel the essence of Korean-style BBQ eating!
Try taking a bite of meat on top of bibim naengmyeon, the spicy-tangy noodles and savory ribs create a surprisingly unique combo. It is a special pairing you can really only experience in Korea, so give it a try!
For bibim naengmyeon, pour in the broth first, mix it well, then top it with the meat. It might feel unfamiliar at first, but the moment you taste it, you will understand exactly why this combo exists!
Last up is mul naengmyeon (chilled noodle soup)! Mix the noodles into the tangy, icy broth, then top with cucumber and meat. A cold bite of noodles while sitting in front of a hot charcoal grill is a real treat, this pairing is also excellent.
Next is fresh samgyeopsal (pork belly)! Since it is grilled differently from ribs, the owner replaces both the charcoal and the grill plate with new ones. This kind of thoughtful attention to creating the best setup for each cut was genuinely impressive.

Samgyeopsal, the signature of Korean BBQ and one of the most commonly enjoyed dishes in Korea, also has its own way to eat it!
In Korean style, when grilling pork belly, you also grill garlic, kimchi, and king oyster mushrooms alongside it. The meat’s richness plus the nutty garlic and tangy kimchi make the flavors pop even more.

The best way to eat it is to wrap the pork belly with garlic and kimchi in lettuce and eat it in one bite. In Korean, this is called 'ssam' (a lettuce wrap), and it is a must-try part of Korean dining culture at 'Cheonggiwa Galbi'!
If you mix your rice right into the doenjang-jjigae, it becomes even more savory and hearty. Paired with meat, it cuts through any richness perfectly, it is a great match!
Try it with rice to finish your meal!
