If you've already left and there's a real problem (like, your color is patchy or uneven), contact the salon. Many will offer a complimentary fix within a certain timeframe.

4. Can I bring my own reference photos?

Yes. Please do. In fact, it's expected. The more photos you bring, the better. Korean stylists work really well with visual references—way better than verbal descriptions.

Save them to your phone or even print them out if you're old-school.

5. How long does each service typically take?

This is important because Korean salons don't rush the way some Western salons do. Here's what to realistically expect:

• Haircut: 45 minutes to an hour. Sometimes longer if you're getting a detailed consultation or if the stylist is being really precise with layering.
• Color: 2-3 hours minimum. This includes consultation, application, processing time (you'll just be sitting for 20-40 minutes), washing, toning, and blow-drying. If you have long or thick hair, add another 30-60 minutes.
• Perm: 3-4 hours, sometimes longer. This is a real time commitment. They'll apply solution, set the rods, apply heat (for heat perms), neutralize, and style. Bring a phone charger and something to do.
• Scalp treatment: 45 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on how intensive it is.
• Combination services (cut + color + treatment): Easily 3-4 hours, sometimes more.

Don't schedule anything tight after your appointment. If you book a 2 PM color appointment, don't plan to meet friends for dinner at 5 PM. Give yourself buffer time.

6. What if my hair is damaged or my scalp is sensitive—can I still get color or a perm?

It depends on how damaged your hair is and what kind of sensitivity you're dealing with. If your scalp gets irritated easily, or if your ends are visibly damaged from previous bleaching or heat styling, tell your stylist upfront during the consultation. Don't wait until they've already started.

A good stylist will assess whether your hair can handle more chemical processing or if you should do a treatment first and come back later for color. Sometimes they'll adjust the technique—use gentler products, lower the developer strength, skip the bleach, or recommend a semi-permanent color instead of permanent.

If you have a known allergy to specific ingredients (like ammonia or PPD in hair dye), mention it immediately. Most salons can work around it, but they need to know in advance.

Salons like id HAIR and A KNACK use gentler, more scalp-friendly products, so if you have ongoing sensitivity issues, those are safer bets.

7. I've never gotten my hair done in Korea before—should I start with a cut, color, or perm?

If it's your first time, I'd recommend starting with a haircut. It's the lowest-risk option, easiest to communicate, and you can see the stylist's skill level without committing to a big change.

Color and perms involve more variables—your natural hair color, how your hair's been treated before, how porous it is, whether it's been bleached. There's more room for results to differ from what you expected, and it's harder to reverse if you don't like it.

If you do want color or a perm on your first visit, just go into it knowing that Korean stylists tend to be more conservative than Western stylists. They'll often suggest something a bit more subtle than what you showed in your reference photo, especially if your hair is damaged or if they're worried the color won't suit your skin tone.

That's not a bad thing—it usually means you'll get a wearable result—but if you want something bold, you might need to push back a little and emphasize that you understand the risks and want to go for it anyway.

8. Should I go to a salon near Seongsu Station or near Seoul Forest Station?

Honestly, it just depends on what else you're doing that day. Both areas are walkable from each other (about 10-15 minutes), so it's not a huge difference.

If you're planning to hit up the main Seongsu shopping street with all the cafes, pop-ups, and boutiques, salons near Seongsu Station will be more convenient. If you're going to Seoul Forest to walk around or take photos, or if you're eating at one of the cafes near the park, go with something closer to Seoul Forest Station.

Also factor in where you're coming from. If you're taking Line 2, Seongsu Station or Ttukseom Station might be easier. If you're coming from Line 7 or transferring, Seoul Forest Station makes more sense.

9. Can I get my hair done the same day or do I need to book in advance?

Weekdays: You might get lucky with a walk-in, especially in the morning.

Weekends: Book ahead. Like, at least 3-5 days in advance. Popular salons are fully booked on Saturdays.

Final Tips from a Local

Best time to visit: Weekday mornings (10 AM - 12 PM) are the least crowded. You'll get more attention from your stylist and the salon won't feel rushed.

Combine with your Seongsu itinerary: Most salons are within a 10-minute walk of Seoul Forest, so plan to explore the park, grab coffee at one of the trendy cafes (Onion Seongsu, turtle hip etc.), or check out the vintage shops on Seongsu-dong Road. If you're getting color done and need to wait 30-40 minutes for it to process, some salons will let you step out—just ask.

If something goes wrong: Stay calm, show them the photo of what you wanted, and ask (politely) if it can be adjusted. Korean salons have great customer service, and most will fix issues without charging extra.
