Our Visit

[이미지 슬라이더]

Today, I visited ‘Handasot Nampo,’ a popular claypot rice restaurant in Busan!

The restaurant is in a great location—close to the open sea and with plenty to see nearby, like Jagalchi Market—perfect for a stroll.

The exterior gave off such a cozy, charming vibe that I was excited even before stepping inside.

There’s a menu at the entrance, which is great because you can check the options a bit in advance before going in.

The interior of the restaurant was very clean and stylish!

The overall atmosphere felt organized yet comfortable, and the seating options were varied, making it suitable for both solo visitors and large groups.

They even had high chairs available, making it a very family-friendly space for guests with children.

The restaurant also provides an English menu and instructions on how to enjoy the dishes, so even those trying Korean food for the first time can enjoy it without any hassle.

After placing our order, the side dishes were served.

Nearly 10 different kinds of banchan were neatly presented, each bursting with flavor and made from fresh ingredients, giving the feeling of dining at a high-end Korean set meal restaurant.

Pairing them with the claypot rice makes for an even more satisfying and hearty meal!

The claypot rice at ‘Handasot’ was definitely different from the rice cooked in a regular electric rice cooker.

Cooked fresh in a cast-iron pot, each grain was perfectly separate and fluffy, with the nutty aroma of scorched rice adding a deeper, richer flavor.

Claypot rice is truly a must-try dish if you’re visiting Korea!

One of ‘Handasot’s’ signature dishes is their light and flavorful grilled fish.

Grilled over a high-temperature natural volcanic stone oven, the fish retains its natural taste, with a crispy exterior and tender, juicy interior, offering a unique flavor experience.

It left a strong impression, as it has a charm that’s different from traditional Korean grilled fish.

Not long after, the editor’s group had their seasonal claypot rice, mackerel claypot rice, galbi claypot rice, salmon claypot rice, and abalone claypot rice all served at once.

Doesn’t it look like a table full of hearty goodness just by looking at it?!

[이미지 슬라이더]

First up, the seasonal claypot rice with mackerel comes with seasonal toppings on the rice and mackerel grilled in a stone oven.

After receiving the claypot rice, scoop the rice into a bowl, add about two spoons of soy sauce and some butter, and mix well.

Pour hot water into the remaining claypot to soak the scorched rice, close the lid, and enjoy it as a warm soup after finishing your meal.

The fluffy texture of the rice, the nutty flavor of the butter, and the rich, savory taste of the grilled mackerel together felt just like enjoying a traditional Korean set meal.

The grilled mackerel was especially impressive!

Usually, mackerel fried in oil can be a bit greasy, but here it’s grilled in a stone oven, so all the excess oil is gone, leaving only the deep, rich flavor of the fish.

The outside was crispy while the inside stayed moist, making the texture amazing. By the editor’s standards, it was truly the best mackerel they’ve ever had.

Although the mackerel comes straight from the stone oven, the best way to enjoy it is to place it on the induction cooker at the table, wait until a little smoke rises, then turn off the heat and eat—it’s perfect that way!

Next up is the galbi claypot rice.

It’s topped with plenty of tender, low-temperature-aged beef chuck, which melts softly in your mouth for an amazing texture.

The sweet and savory galbi marinade seeps into the rice, so even a single spoonful is packed with flavor.

Just like the other claypot rice, scoop it into a bowl and pour hot water into the remaining claypot to enjoy as scorched rice soup afterward.

This dish is especially good with a bit of wasabi, which brings out the clean, rich flavor of the meat!

Next is the salmon claypot rice. It’s made with Norwegian Superior-grade salmon, marinated in a special sauce and grilled over direct heat.

The salmon is mild and nutty, without any fishy taste, so even those who aren’t usually fans of salmon can enjoy it easily.

Thanks to its moist texture, it was hard to stop eating, and the natural flavor of the salmon paired perfectly with the special sauce.

For the best experience, scoop the rice into a bowl and mix in a little of the salmon sauce to taste before eating!

Finally, the abalone claypot rice had a rich, savory abalone sauce infused throughout the rice, giving it a deep flavor reminiscent of high-end abalone porridge.

The chewy abalone maintained a great texture, and the plump, springy shrimp included in the dish paired perfectly.

For this claypot rice, you can simply scoop the rice into a bowl without adding any extra seasoning and pour in the hot water to enjoy as scorched rice soup afterward!

Another dish to introduce is the eel claypot rice.

Whole freshwater eel is carefully brushed with a special sauce and grilled in a high-temperature 500ºC stone oven.

The subtle smoky flavor enhances the eel’s naturally moist and tender texture, making it incredibly satisfying.

Eel is considered a premium ingredient that’s not easy to find in Korea, so for this quality and portion at this price, it really felt like excellent value!

The editor also ordered chili fritters as a side dish.

The peppers were packed with filling, and the batter was crispy, making them light and not greasy at all.

If you’re a fan of fried food, these chili fritters are definitely worth trying!

‘Handasot Nampo Branch’ is a place where you can fully enjoy not only generous and heartfelt hot pot rice, but also premium grilled fish and a wide variety of side dishes all in one hearty meal.

Thanks to its neat interior, emotional atmosphere, and a menu comparable to high-end Korean set meals, this restaurant is popular not only with tourists visiting Busan but also with locals.

If you’re craving a hearty and delicious meal in Busan, or if you’re in the mood for a pot rice dish full of emotion, be sure to visit ‘Handasot Nampo Branch’ at least once!
