Our Visit
Today, I visited a famous rice cake shop called Youngmill Myeongryeheon located 2 minutes from Myeongdong Station. 'Myeongrye' is the old regional name of Myeongdong and it means inheriting traditions while also reinterpreting and developing them in a modern way!
The white-toned interior felt clean and bright. Many foreign visitors were enjoying Korean rice cakes while shopping in Myeongdong.
I like that there is a wide variety of choices, from traditional to fusion rice cakes. Please keep in mind that this is a takeout-only store that accepts card payments only!
It’s also great for gifts, with beautiful traditional wrapping that reflects Korean culture!
There's a tasting corner at the entrance where you can sample different types. It’s perfect for visitors new to Korean rice cakes to try before buying.
Here’s a look at the menu at Youngmill Myeongryeheon. First up are their signature soft and chewy injeolmi varieties. They’re best enjoyed on the day of purchase, but if you have leftovers, freezing them for a day helps extend their freshness. When ready to eat, just let them thaw at room temperature for 1-2 hours for the best texture.
Next up is Honey Orang, a handmade snack with a crispy yet soft texture and a rich honey flavor. It’s available individually or as a gift set. Unopened packages should be stored in a cool place away from direct sunlight, and once opened, it’s best to enjoy them soon. Plus, if you visit with a Creatrip coupon, you can get one Honey Orang for free!
Yakgwa comes in various types and is also sold individually, perfect for those wanting a small taste of Korea.
Lastly, you can also try Injeolmi Patjuk Tteok (glutinous rice cake with red bean porridge) and Chapssal Tteok (chewy sweet rice cake).
Black Sesame Injeolmi stood out the most as their signature item. The nutty, slightly sweet black sesame powder pairs perfectly with the chewy rice cake, making it a crowd favorite. Ground multiple times for a rich, deep flavor, the black sesame coating is generously applied, adding to its deliciousness!
I tried Kongomul Injeolmi, a traditional Korean rice cake coated in soybean powder. The chewy, soft texture made it feel like it melted in my mouth.
Next, I tried the Chestnut Castella Injeolmi. It’s a unique combination not commonly found elsewhere, but the smooth, nutty flavor blended perfectly!
Another new item is Corn Castella Injeolmi. Corn injeolmi is rare, but the subtle sweetness and texture of corn made it even more delicious!
The last one is Mugwort Castella Injeolmi. It has a fragrant mugwort flavor with a balanced sweetness and a slight bitterness. With so many unique injeolmi options beyond the traditional ones, it’s definitely worth a try!
Now, let’s look at the different types of Honey Orang. Each piece is individually packaged, making it hygienic and easy to enjoy anywhere. Unlike other Orang snacks, it didn’t stick to my teeth and had a perfect balance of softness and crunch!
The Injeolmi Honey Orang, coated in savory soybean powder. The mix of honey syrup and rice cake powder creates a perfect balance of sweetness and nuttiness!
Next, I tried the Black Sesame Honey Orang, coated in white chocolate cream and black sesame powder. Despite the sweetness, the black sesame balanced it out beautifully.
Finally, I also tried 'Yakgwa'.
'Original Yakgwa' was really sweet and chewy, making it a great basic flavor that even first-time eaters could enjoy without feeling overwhelmed!
The Gamtae Yakgwa was a unique combination with a strong gamtae (Korean seaweed) aroma even before opening. The flavor was even more pronounced after tasting, and it paired surprisingly well with the sweet yakgwa!
Lastly, the Black Sesame Yakgwa is another unique take on traditional medicinal confections. With black sesame as a signature ingredient, it delivered a rich, sweet flavor. If you're looking for rare and authentic Korean sweets, Youngmill Myeongryeheon is the place to visit!
You can watch them carefully handcrafting traditional rice cakes in the store every day. Here, they’re making their signature Black Sesame Injeolmi!
Made with locally sourced glutinous rice, these soft, chewy white rice cakes are generously coated in black sesame powder and neatly cut.
The box is lined with black sesame powder, with neatly cut injeolmi placed on top. Watching them generously coat it until the very last moment was impressive. Seeing it made fresh on-site made it even more trustworthy and enjoyable!
If you’re looking for premium and delicious Korean rice cakes, this place is a must-visit!
