Our Visit
Today, I visited Zoo Sindang in Hongdae. The name means "a place that serves the spirit of alcohol," and the bar has a unique, moody vibe. The exterior captures the feel of a traditional Korean fortune-telling house, perfectly matching its concept.
The interior matches the concept as well, with a dark, moody vibe enhanced by colorful lights.
The concept really comes to life with the props and decorations placed throughout the interior.
Get ready to grab a seat at the bar and order. The appetizer menu is presented in a fortune-telling style!
The menu is also in English, so it was easy to understand.
As the name suggests, Zoo Sindang is all about celebrating the spirit of alcohol, and they have a dedicated menu just for drinks.
At Zoo Sindang, the cocktails are inspired by the Twelve Zodiac Animals. There are 12 unique cocktails, each representing a different animal.
You might be unsure about the cocktails at first, but the menu provides detailed descriptions to help. Each cocktail lists its main ingredients, alcohol content, acidity, sweetness, and texture. The higher the texture rating, the creamier the cocktail.
If you're still unsure after reading the menu, you can ask the bartender for a recommendation based on your preferences. I decided to try three cocktails: the Sheep, Ox, and Dragon.
After ordering, I was given complimentary snacks. The basic snack was a high-quality vegetable mix chip, which was really tasty.
Sitting at the bar, I had the chance to watch the bartender mix the cocktails right in front of me.
Watching the cocktail being made made me even more excited about its taste.
All the cocktails I ordered are ready. Let me tell you about each one!
First up is the "Ox" cocktail. It's made with Tonka bean-infused rum, Earl Grey, cream, and cinnamon, and comes with a cute ox-shaped garnish.
Ox Cocktail
The base rum has a bit of a strong taste, but the sweetness from the Earl Grey and cinnamon cream balances it out. Personally, it was my favorite!
Next up is the "Sheep" cocktail. This sheep-themed drink is made with white rum, melon, broccoli, lemon, and a touch of cotton candy.
This cotton candy-topped cocktail, with its fresh green hue, brings to mind lambs frolicking in a meadow.
Sheep Cocktail
Unlike what you’d expect, the cotton candy had a nutty texture and flavor, inspired by the traditional Turkish dessert. It was fascinating and unusual since it was my first time trying it. Since cotton candy can make a drink too sweet, I recommend enjoying it separately.
Lastly, we have the "Dragon" cocktail. Made with chamomile-infused gin, rosemary, and lemon, this drink has an exciting twist hidden inside!
They pour a drink into a glass from a steaming kettle, and as the beverage fills the cup, you can see the color gradually changing!
Dragon Cocktail
At first, the drink starts out purple, but by the end, it changes to a pinkish-red hue. This cocktail, infused with smoke, is meant to symbolize a dragon rising.
At Zoo Sindang, they not only offer unique concept cocktails but also a variety of high-quality, flavorful dishes. I ordered cold noodle soup with sliced boiled pork, potato pancakes, and spicy fish stew.
Potato Pancake
First up, the potato pancake is a highly recommended dish at Zoo Sindang. The mix of honey butter sauce, raw egg, and arugula on top pairs perfectly with the pancake.
This dish is called Naengsuyukmyeon, with thinly sliced cold boiled pork served with noodles.
Cold Boiled Pork with Noodles
The noodles served on top of the boiled pork are angel hair pasta, often used in cold dishes. Their thin and firm texture paired perfectly with the tender boiled pork.
Spicy Seafood Soup
The last dish I’ll introduce is Maeuntang. This version feels more refined than what you'd find at a typical seafood restaurant, with soft tofu, vegetables, and a mix of seafood.
The mix of large, plump shrimp, crunchy bean sprouts, and soft tofu was incredibly satisfying.
Mulberry Leaf Ice Cream
The final item is the handcrafted Mulberry Leaf Ice Cream, made right in-store.
Mulberry leaf ice cream is a delightful treat, with the subtle aroma of tea leaves lingering in your mouth. Paired with the seaweed crackers and leaf-shaped chocolate, it offers a unique and memorable taste.
Visit Zoo Sindang in Hongdae, a pub with a Korean shaman theme, where you can experience traditional Korean culture. Located in the heart of Hongdae, it's easy to access and offers a wide range of cocktails. Also, don't forget to show the Creatrip coupon to get free signature cat cake!
