Our Visit
Today, I visited Tong Tong, located on the main street of Hongdae! It's just a 2-minute walk from Hongdae Station, making it super easy to get to, and the clean, freshly renovated exterior is a nice touch.
Just like the exterior, the interior is also clean and pleasant. The tables are spacious, and there are plenty of them, so even with a large group, it feels comfortable.
Each table has a kiosk, making it super easy to place your order. You can even check out photos of the dishes, which makes choosing what to eat much easier!
I ordered the King Makchang + Full Plate set. The Plump Plate comes with hangjeongsal, pork jowl, and samgyeopsal, and there are three set options where you can also enjoy beef ribs and king intestines. You can choose between the Plump Plate or Large Plate based on the amount of meat, so pick the one that fits your appetite and give it a try!
Once the order is placed, the table is quickly set up. For side dishes, I got onion pickles, bean sprouts, corn salad, radish salad, and a variety of leafy greens.
King Makchang + Full Plate
The meat I ordered is ready! Samgyeopsal, hangjeongsal, pork jowl, and even the dark-colored makchang all come neatly arranged on one plate.
Now it's time to grill the meat! I also added some minced parsley to enhance the flavor. The samgyeopsal comes pre-cut, so there's no need to fuss with scissors. If you prefer smaller bites, you can always cut it into pieces while grilling.
Flip the meat frequently while cooking to prevent it from burning, and make sure it’s cooked through. Intestines take longer to grill than other meats, so it’s best to cook and eat the meat first before tackling the intestines.
Before you know it, the pork belly turns crispy and perfectly cooked. It has that juicy, thick look that makes your mouth water.
With the marinated pork jowl, there's a self-service bar where you can grab as many side dishes as you like. I love being able to choose and eat exactly what I want!
Here, you can enjoy unlimited refills of various veggies, seasonings, and even raw fish without any extra charge. You can also grab water easily on your own!
Drizzle some sesame oil over the garlic to grill it without burning. The nutty flavor of the sesame oil really brings out the taste of the roasted garlic.
When you place the garlic plate on the grill, the garlic will cook along with the meat.
Now it's time to dig into the meat! Dip the perfectly cooked meat in ssamjang, or if you prefer, you can dip it in salt for a simpler flavor.
Eating the meat by itself is great, but it’s even better when wrapped in lettuce with garlic and onion pickles. Making a full wrap for your friends and sharing it with them creates a special memory too.
King Makchang
After trying meat, it's now time to grill king makchang!
When served whole, make sure to cut the makchang into bite-sized pieces once it’s partially cooked. Grilled intestines taste best when cooked all the way through.
The perfectly cooked makchang, with its crispy outside and moist, chewy inside, has a rich, nutty flavor that makes it hard to stop eating! Personally, I think it tastes best when dipped in ssamjang.
Bulgogi
Finally, I’m going to try the main dish!
Seasoned pork belly should be grilled over low heat at the edges without burning.
The seasoning adds a unique flavor, and the chewy texture of the pork neck is amazing. It’s delicious on its own, but even better when paired with the crunchy pickled onions!
Soy Bean Soup
When eating pork in Korea, you can’t skip the classic doenjang jjigae. The thick pork belly doenjang jjigae is packed with tofu and vegetables, giving the soup a clean and refreshing flavor.
Steamed Egg
Finally, you can't forget the fluffy steamed egg custard! It's offered as a perk when you reserve through Creatrip, so make sure to take advantage of this opportunity.
Visit the Tong Tong restaurant, just a 2-minute walk from Hongdae Station! Enjoy a variety of pork cuts and experience one of the best meals in Korea!
