In ancient Korea, there was a royal cuisine that was mostly eaten by the kings of the Joseon Dynasty. Today, there is a restaurant that interprets this in a modern way and offers it as a course menu. This restaurant is Donghwagohok. We made a visit to the Jamsil Branch, located right by Seokchon Lake and Lotte World. Let's check it out!

Our Visit

Donghwagohok is a course cuisine specialty restaurant located on the 14th floor of a building right next to Exit 6 of Seolleung Station.

As soon as you enter, you will notice the high ceiling, which make it spacious and give a bright and pleasant feeling.

The biggest advantage of the Seolleung Branch is the city view. You great view of the sky and the city when sitting by the window. If you visit during the evening hours, you can enjoy the sunset and night view together, so please keep that in mind!

We had Dinner Course C for two people, and also ordered the Omija Ade. It was fresh and sweet, so it was nice to drink it refreshingly in the middle of the course meal.

The first course of the dinner menu was a cold pine nut porridge. Hazelnuts, black sesame seeds, and peanuts are added, making it savory and smooth.

Acorn jelly and cucumber added various textures and balanced out the rich flavor. Also, the cool and refreshing taste of the porridge blended well, so it was perfect to start with.

The second menu is Mokseokchohwa, a menu that captivates the gaze from the visuals. It comes with a buckwheat pancake, skate tripe, a truffle short rib sandwich, and a cod tart. We were instructed to eat them in that order.

The skate tripe is a combination of acorn jelly made from skate skin, kimchi, and beef tripe, and it was the most delicious among the traditional Korean fermented foods. The chewy skate, which can be known for its fishy smell, was not fishy at all and delicious.

After that, they served the Royal Fish Salad and Beef Pancakes. The beef pancake was incredibly tender and savory, without the meat being tough. You can enjoy the pancake with the sauce it comes with or dip it in the soy sauce that comes with the Royal Fish Salad as well.

The Royal Fish Salad contains seaweed, mushrooms, zucchini, and sea bream with grapefruit soy sauce. The sea bream meat was very tasty and came with a sweet and sour sauce, which was really delicious.

The beef pancakes go really well with the pickled vegetables and sauce. It was a burst of flavor!

This is a menu item that is only available with Dinner Course C; the Charcoal-grilled Chicken. It is a spicy marinated grilled chicken dish that is topped with various ingredients such as sweet potatoes and lettuce.

The sauce was a bit spicier than I thought, so when eaten with the vegetables that came out together, it was just the right level of spiciness. It was both savory and spicy-sweet, and had a taste similar to dakgalbi.

The most fascinating part was the Seafood Soft Tofu Stew in a clay pot. It was very cute and reminiscent of Korean traditions!

Like in the picture covered lightly above, the top layer, made of potato, can be broken easily with a spoon. The stew itself had a deep seafood flavor and can be enjoyed with the layer of potato.

These are the main side dishes that come with the main menu. It was well-structured and especially went well with the meat, as it helped to cut the greasiness of the meat.

The side dishes were served with the Seaweed Soup, which came with pickled octopus, seaweed, soy sauce, and wasabi.

Next, the Marinated Banquet Short Ribs, Donghwa Goldongmyeon, and Gohok Naengmyeon were served. We ordered one each of the noodles so we could try both!

The Donghwa Goldongmyeon have a rich and nutty flavor with the addition of toasted perilla seeds and perilla oil. It was really savory and delicious. Together, the sea squirt and chives went well with the nutty flavor.

The Donghwa Bibimmyeon is the same buckwheat noodles, but the sauce comes as a bibim sauce. These noodles were delicious as well!

The Marinated Banquet Short Ribs is made with 12 ingredients and has a deliciously subtle flavor of sauce that is really deep and flavorful. Surrounded by salad, roasted garlic, chilis, and mushrooms, it becomes even more delicious.

The meat can be eaten in various combinations according to personal taste. When I tried eating it with rice, I put a little bit of wasabi on it, and the meat melted in my mouth.

The salted octopus dish was delicious as well. The octopus was plump and had a sophisticated taste, not like ordinary salted seafood.

In the Seaweed Soup, there was a generous amount of pollack. The broth is rich and boiled with the pollack, so it has a clean taste.

You can wrap the kimchi that comes with it in rice and dip it in soy sauce. The combination of seaweed and rice is a favorite for all Koreans!

Personally, the combination of the Donghwa Goldongmyeon and meat was the most delicious. When you eat seasoned meat with savory and spicy noodles, it's so flavorful that you can't stop eating.

After enjoying various combinations, the main menu ended and dessert was served. Okseolhwa and Dasobangwa are desserts that are inspired by Korean traditional desserts.

Okseolhwa is a fresh sherbet topped with orange and pine leaves. The sherbet was refreshing, making it a perfect way to cleanse the palate after eating meat.

The Dasobangwa is a combination of a mini walnut tart paired with a refreshing Omija tea. They went really well together!

We really enjoyed the food at Donghwagohok! It was a delightful meal with a beautiful view that pleased both the eyes and the taste buds. If you want to taste special modern Korean royal cuisine during your trip, be sure to visit Donghwagohok!
