Our Visit

We recently visited On6.5, a popular Korean dining bar in Anguk that specializes in kimchi! On6.5 derives its name from the ideal temperature at which kimchi ferments to achieve the most delicious taste. It embodies the philosophy of providing all kimchi dishes in the most delicious way possible.

With the slogan "Embracing the Diversity of Kimchi," On6.5 proudly showcases a wide range of kimchi dishes that blend traditional kimchi with exotic ingredients like basil, perilla leaves, and other assorted vegetables. It can be considered a multifaceted cultural hub, offering an immersive experience to explore the world of kimchi in all its glory.

Being one of the hottest spots in Seoul, On6.5 has hosted various celebrity events. The restaurant gained fame as the venue for the PeaceMinusOne x Nike dinner event, a collaboration collection with GD. It became known as a gathering place for GD's acquaintances. Among the celebrities who were invited and visited the restaurant, notable names include Taeyang from Big Bang, BTS's RM and Jimin, Son Na-eun, LE SSERAFIM, Kazuha, and Heo Yoon-jin. They all enjoyed their time at the restaurant together.

We made our visit on a Sunday afternoon at 3 o' clock and the restaurant was already quite full. From the outside, the space looks like an art gallery and looking in, you can see the many characteristics of a traditional hanok that's been pleasantly preserved.

When I visited at 3 p.m. on the weekend, the sun was still shining brightly, and the space felt illuminated and vibrant. On weekdays, they operate exclusively during the evening hours, and the combination of the lighting and interior design creates a sophisticated atmosphere. I highly recommend visiting on weekdays as well!

Shall we take a look around the store for a moment? Please note that On 6.5 is a place where ordering alcoholic beverages is mandatory, so only adults are allowed to enter. Since they serve a lot of wine, you'll find various types of wine glasses displayed in one corner of the store.

As you look around, you'll get to see the architectural characteristics of a hanok, which is a unique experience in itself.

We were seated at a table and the cutlery caught our eye. The cute glass cutlery stand matched perfectly with the chic black cutlery.

I took a look at the menu at On 6.5 to decide what appetizers to order. They have unique names for their dishes, as many of them are made with kimchi, such as Kimchi Tempura, Dongchimi Cheese, and Baechu Ssam (cabbage wrap). Since I arrived at 3 p.m., I decided to have an early dinner and ordered a variety of dishes.

Since ordering alcoholic beverages is a requirement, I also took a look at the drink menu. They had a wide variety of special traditional liquor options, and the price range ranged from 50,000 to 100,000 won, providing a wide range of choices.

While pondering over which drink to order, I decided to seek the recommendation of one of the staff members. They suggested a white wine that pairs well with the appetizers at On 6.5. The thought of enjoying food with wine at a fantastic restaurant got me excited, as it has been a while since I've had such an experience.

After placing our order, we waited for a little while, and then we were served with a welcome drink and welcome food. In the royal banquets hosted by kings during the Joseon Dynasty, they would offer a special drink called 'Heonju' to express gratitude to the honored guests. Similarly, at On 6.5, they start the meal by offering 'Heonju' with heartfelt sincerity to the various customers who visit.

The welcome drink was a refreshing non-alcoholic beverage with a greenish hue, and it had a sweet and tangy taste. Furthermore, true to the restaurant's kimchi concept, the welcome food, which incorporated sweet potato mousse and kimchi, was light and enjoyable to eat.

Domaine Desire Petit Chardonnay Le Frapiot 2020 Jura France (125,000 KRW)

After the welcome drink, the white wine that I ordered arrived promptly. As someone who enjoys wine, I must say it was one of the cleanest and smoothest wines I have ever tasted. It was definitely a top choice! If you visit On 6.5 Dining Bar, I highly recommend selecting a beverage that pairs well with the appetizers they offer.

Abalone Kimci Kimbap (18,000 KRW)

'Abalone Janggimchi Kimbap' is a dish where rice is wrapped with salty and savory gamtae (dried kelp) and filled with mukeunji (aged kimchi) and abalone sauce. Abalone itself is delicious, but to make it into a kimbap with mukeunji and gamtae was an interesting combination! When I tasted it, I was even more enchanted. The seasoning was just right, and the quality of the ingredients made me feel healthier.

Braised Beef Ribs (36,000 KRW)

Even in the beef short rib braised dish, kimchi is served as a side. When I ate it together with the white kimchi, barbecue sauce, and gochujang, it acted as a seasoning and enhanced the flavor of the meat. It was truly delicious.

Kimchi Tempura (19,000 KRW)

'Kimchi Tempura' is a dish made by wrapping baek-kimchi (white kimchi), shrimp, garlic chive pickles, and gochujangajji (red chili pepper pickles) with seaweed and deep-frying them. Anything deep-fried is delicious, but the idea of deep-fried food with kimchi is quite unique, isn't it?

They also serve a dish where they top a delicious menu item with white cauliflower dongchimi and shower cream. Just by its visual presentation, it already stands out, but wow! The combination of the refreshing and flavorful kimchi tempura is truly amazing. I feel like I could eat it every day.

Cabbage Ssam(wrap) (21,000 KRW)

This is On 6.5's signature dish, the 'Baechu Ssam' (cabbage wrap). It was beautifully presented on a plate, resembling a hand-wrapped shape. This menu features cabbage wraps filled with gochujang kimchi, doraji kimchi, and a combination of pork and beef, all cooked with red wine.

We cut the Cabbage Ssam in half, and I was pleasantly surprised by the generous amount of fillings inside. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that there were macaroni pieces as well. When I ate it together with the meat, the sauce coated everything perfectly, and it complemented the flavors beautifully.

Sea Urchin Seaweed Noodle Soup (27,000 KRW)

We've got some new items on the menu for 2024! First up is the Sea Urchin and Seaweed Noodle Soup – packed with sea urchin roe, seaweed, kimchi, cream, beef broth, and Grana Padano. The sea urchin taste isn't overpowering, and the noodles are delightfully chewy.

Kimchi Tteokbokki (16,000 KRW)

Have you ever had Kimchi Tteokbokki with aged kimchi? The soft rice cakes, enoki mushrooms, and fish cakes blend surprisingly well with the unique taste of Korean aged kimchi.

Pork and Chive Dumplings (28,000 KRW)

The rich aroma of porcini mushrooms, the freshness of seasonal mushrooms and mussels, along with the crisp texture of asparagus, create a delightful harmony.

The meal was very satisfying as we enjoyed various appetizers with wine. Please keep in mind that there is a time limit of 2 hours on weekends.

If you're looking to explore the Bukchon Hanok Village and experience unique flavors of kimchi during your visit to Korea, I highly recommend On 6.5! It's a fantastic restaurant where you can taste delicious dishes and discover the diverse flavors of kimchi.
