Have you heard of Gamjatang? Gamjatang is a soup made with pork spine and neck bones, and it is known for its hot and spicy yet savory broth. In particular, to mask the distinctive smell of pork, gamjatang is seasoned with a blend of spices and seasonings that typically include perilla seed powder, but the exact mixture can vary by restaurant, leading to unique flavors. Today, I would like to introduce you to 'Kongbbyeosut Gamjatang' located in Myeongdong, which offers gamjatang with a rich flavor from bones boiled with locally sourced ground beans and beef bones.

Our Visit

Today, I went to a restaurant called 'Kongbbyeosut Gamjatang' located in Myeong-dong. The restaurant is only a 5-minute walk from Euljiro 1-ga Station, making it easily accessible.

We arrived there around 4 pm for an early dinner, so there weren't many customers and we could comfortably enjoy our meal.

Once you sit down, you'll be able to see the menu, which has the English names for each dish included. The main dishes here would be the Gamjatang with soybean and veggies(dried radish leaves) and Gamjatang with soybean and aged kimchi. We ordered the former.

*Gamjatang with soybean and aged kimchi (Small) 36,000 KRW

*Gamjatang with soybean and veggies(dried radish leaves) (Small) 36,000 KRW

*Add veggies(dried radish leaves) 5,000 KRW

After placing your order, the side dishes are served first, including kimchi, cabbage kimchi, chili onion, and ssamjang (a dipping sauce for lettuce wraps). They also provide a sauce for dipping the meat in the gamjatang.

They use a ladle to loosen the soybean sprouts that are on top of the gamjatang, and once it starts boiling, they scoop up the broth and sprinkle it over the vegetables.

The aged kimchi will come in whole. You can cut it up to bite-sized pieces according to your liking. We also added extra veggies, as it is the best part of Gamjatang.

Though it is in a boiling pot in front of us, the meat is already fully cooked, so you can eat it right away. It is recommended to leave the fire on at a low heat as you enjoy your meal, so the soup can thicken up.

The dipping sauce for the meat is made with mustard sauce, which is prepared by mixing basic seasonings such as soy sauce, water, vinegar, and sugar. The meat, soaked in the broth of the gamjatang, pairs really well with the mustard sauce.

In addition, you can also wrap the kimchi with the meat and dip it in the mustard sauce. However, the editor personally found that wrapping the meat with the pickled radish and dipping it in the mustard sauce was the most delicious way to enjoy it. Also, when you finish most of the soup, you can mix the remaining rice with the soup and fry it for a tasty rice dish!

Visit Kongbbyeosut Gamjatang in Myeong-dong and enjoy a satisfying meal with the added softness of the bean sprouts in the soup.
