When you're feeling under the weather, unwell, or experiencing the discomfort of unfamiliar cuisine in a foreign country, there's one type of food that provides comfort like no other - porridge. Despite its seemingly simple appearance, the truth is that making a delicious bowl of porridge requires a great deal of skill and attention to detail. Ingredients such as glutinous rice flour, sesame oil, soy sauce, and tuna extract are just a few of the many seasonings used to achieve its rich flavor. For those in search of a quality porridge restaurant in Korea, we have the perfect recommendation: Seowon Jukjip, located in the heart of Myeongdong. It's a well-known establishment that serves up some of the best porridge around!

Our Visit

Today, we visited a famous porridge restaurant called Seowon Jukjib in Myeong-dong. Seowon Jukjib is located right next to Exit 9 of Myeong-dong Station, so it's so close that you don't need to turn on your map.

I thought the store would be small because the stairs were narrow, but it was surprisingly spacious and comfortable! Also, there were table mats laid out according to the number of people at the table, which added to the traditional atmosphere.

Recently, Seowon Jukjib, where we visited today, was featured on the popular food program "Delicious Guys." "Delicious Guys" is a food exploration program where food-loving celebrities visit famous restaurants throughout the country, and many visitors actually come to visit the restaurants after watching the show.

We took a seat at the innermost part, and we set up the cutlery before starting to eat.

The basic side dishes that come with the porridge are stir-fried dried peppers, mung bean sprout salad, and homemade squid jeotgal (salted seafood). They complement the porridge very well. Among them, the squid jeotgal is made by the owner himself, so the taste and quality are guaranteed!

*Shrimp 16,000 KRW
In the shrimp porridge, the shrimp is not cocktail shrimp, but whole shrimp that are peeled and prepared one by one. Perhaps because they are whole, the shrimp have large heads and when you put them in your mouth, your mouth is filled up.

*Mushroom & Oyster Porridge 16,000 KRW
In the mushroom and oyster porridge, the oysters are also individually prepared by hand, using fresh oysters. Although it may be more time-consuming, it is much more hygienic and enhances the flavor of the abalone.

*Chicken Porridge 17,000 KRW
The chicken porridge contains ginseng and chicken, so even if you don't have samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup), it can be a good source of nutrition for your body.

*Special Abalone Porridge 24,000 KRW
We had the special abalone porridge during our visit, made with top-grade abalone. It was a delicious porridge.

When eating the porridge at Seowon Jukjip, including the premium abalone porridge, it's divided into three stages. First, the porridge is scooped out without disrupting its shape, so that you can taste the unique flavor of the porridge itself.

The second step is to mix an egg, roasted seaweed powder, and sesame seeds together and eat it with the porridge. The egg yolk blends into the porridge, creating a smoother taste.

In the third step, you sprinkle the ojingeo jeotgal (fermented squid) on top of the porridge and eat it together. The chewy texture of the squid and the savory flavor of the jeotgal complement the porridge well. Personally, we thought that eating it with the ojingeo jeotgal was the most delicious. Many foreign visitors, especially those from Japan, seem to love the ojingeo jeotgal and often purchase it. We could understand why after tasting it!

The abalone in the juk was not tough at all and was very tender, making it easy to enjoy even when eating just the abalone on its own. It was definitely not just any ordinary abalone, but truly top-grade quality!

That's a great deal for those who want to enjoy the deliciousness of the traditional Korean juk (porridge) at home. It's convenient that the milky kit is vacuum-packed, taking up less space and with an easy cooking method. I'm sure those who have visited the restaurant through Creatrip would appreciate the discount offer.

As I mentioned earlier, they also sell their homemade squid fish sauce separately. It's packed with an ice pack to keep it from spoiling, so I recommend trying it out and if you like it, consider purchasing it to take home.
How to Get There

Exit Myeongdong Station from Exit 9.

Turn around and go straight. You will see a sign for the porridge restaurant on the building right in front of you.

To get to the restaurant, enter the Se-ryung Building and go down to the basement level. You will arrive at the restaurant.
