Our Visit
Today, we visited Byungari Kimbap, a snack bar located in Myeongdong.
As the name suggests, there were baby chickens welcoming customers from the entrance!
When you go down the stairs, you'll see the entrance to the store. Be careful when going down the stairs as they are a bit high!
The wall next to the entrance was also decorated cutely, making it fun to look at.
The combination of white and yellow in the interior design reminded you of the white and yolk of an egg, which goes well with the name of the store!
When we went, it was bustling with people. Many office workers from nearby areas were there, and among foreign visitors, there were many Japanese guests.
You can use the self-service counter for the front dish, scissors, and water.
Each table had a utensil container and tissue placed on it, and the tissue case was also designed in the shape of a baby chicken. We were pretty impressed.
Neatly arranged on the side of the counter were small kimbaps and yubuchobap that had already been prepared. The special rice used in Chick Gimbap has been researched for a long time, and it's expected to be really delicious.
On the left side, there are fish cakes and tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) ready to be served. As a type of Korean fast food, one of the characteristics of a snack bar is that the food comes out quickly.
There is a menu board displayed on a screen above. Even if you don't speak Korean, it's okay because if you turn your head to the right, there is an English menu board available! Wherever you go, set menus are a great value option! That's why we order Set B!
Also, "Byeongari Gimbap" was once featured by Korean comedian Kim Jun-hyun on the "What's in My Bag" show. Perhaps because of that, it feels more trustworthy and enjoyable to eat.
Next to the order counter, there is a dish return station. After finishing your meal, you can place your dishes on the tray and return it to the designated station.
When you place an order, a number is printed on the receipt. You have to wait for your order while watching the screen near the order counter.
When your number is called, you can give your ticket to the staff and then take your food to enjoy. Don't forget to check the number on your ticket to make sure you grab the correct order!
Set B 28,000 KRW
Set B is generous enough for 3-4 people, offering an array of dishes including Chick Kimbap, various other gimbaps, yubuchobap (sushi with fried tofu), classic tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), dakgangjeong (crispy sweet chicken), and fish cakes.
You'll know it's an incredibly hearty set just from the photos.
Also, inside Chick Kimbap, there's a chick doll, the mascot of Chick Kimbap. If you take a certification shot with the doll, it turns out even cuter.
Tteokbokki
The tteokbokki at Chick Kimbap is named 'School Front Tteokbokki.' From the bowl it's served in to its taste, it's crafted to replicate the tteokbokki sold at street stalls in front of schools during Koreans' elementary school days. Koreans can reminisce about their childhood while enjoying it, and foreigners can experience the taste of Korean street food.
Busan Fishcake Sticks
Indeed, when it comes to fish cakes, Busan is famous, and Chick Kimbap also uses Busan-style fish cakes. If you find the kimbap or yubu chobap a bit dry, you can refresh your palate with the soft texture of the fish cakes and their broth.
Kimbap (in order - Chick Kimbap, Jeju Tonkatsu Kimbap, Ham Egg Sandwich Kimbap, Grilled Beef Yubu Roll Kimbap
The Ham-Egg Sandwich Gimbap includes cheese, ham, and egg, all rolled in seaweed, giving it a vibe similar to a maki roll. It's filled with crispy vegetables, providing a satisfying crunch and adding a healthy element.
The Grilled Beef Yubu Roll Gimbap has a really unique composition. It's wrapped in once-fried yubu (tofu skin), which brings out a more savory flavor in the gimbap.
The Jeju Tonkatsu Gimbap has an addition of pork cutlet to the traditional Chick Kimbap, The plump pork cutlet enhances the kimbap's flavor profile.
*Yubu Chobap (from left to right - Grilled Bulgogi, Myeongran Mayo, Tuna Mayo, Grilled Eel)
The Grilled Eel Yubu chobap is extremely popular due to its sweet and savory seasoning, thick and well-marinated eel, and lightly torched yubu (fried tofu skin).
The Grilled Beef Yubu Chobap was particularly flavorful, with two kinds of sauces included, giving it a much richer taste.
The Tuna Mayo Yubu chobap, with its clean and simple base, combined with the fantastic mix of tuna and mayo, is the epitome of a steady, classic flavor.
*Fried Chicken (big)
The Fried Chicken, with its crispy fried coating and sweetly seasoned sauce thoroughly applied, was very satisfying, filled with juicy meat inside.
That concludes the introduction of all the menu items in Set B.
After finishing your meal, return your dishes to the dish return counter and you're done! Visit the Chick Gimbap Myeong-dong branch to use a discount coupon and admire the cute decorations while enjoying delicious Korean snacks!
If you wish to take the set menus as takeout, you simply need to request this when you visit the store, and if you've ordered a dosirak (lunch box), it will be pre-packed for you.
Chick Kimbap also adds an element of visual enjoyment, as their takeout boxes feature their mascot, the chick, making them fun to look at.
