Neungrado, located in Myeongdong, is a restaurant that specializes in Pyeongyang traditional cuisine. In recent years, there has been a boom in the popularity of the Pyeongyang Cold Noodles among Koreans and Neungrado's most popular dish happens to be their Pyeongyang Cold Noodles. We also stopped by Neungrado to get a bowl of Pyeongyang cold noodles today.
Neungrado has its own 2-story building which looks relatively new. The first floor has a whopping 50 seats and looks super clean so you won't have to worry about hygiene. There are seats for people who come in small groups of 1 or 2 so you can eat comfortably even if you come alone.
The second floor looks much more spacious and has more room between each table. The second floor can seat up to 80 people so it is rare that you'd have to wait for a table.
Pyeongyang Cold Noodles 15,000 KRW
Neungrado's signature dish is the Pyeongyang Cold Noodles. The chilled broth is made of top-grade Korean Hanwoo beef which is why it is so rich in flavor. Most Pyeongyang noodles have a rather blandness that's actually what people like about it, but this bowl of Pyeongyang cold noodles was flavorful! The combination of the rich broth, the aroma of the buckwheat noodles, and the toppings were quite pleasant.
Eobukjaengban (Medium) 어북쟁반 (중) 80,000 KRW
The Eobukjaengban is often ordered at dinner time because it pairs nicely with alcohol. This dish may seem unfamiliar but it is a hot pot with meat resting on a bed of veggies. The hot pot slowly boils in front of you as you eat it. The beef is super tender and the mushrooms, green onions, egg, and broth is eaten with the tender beef.
Mung bean Pancakes (Half portion) 10,000 KRW
Among the appetizers, the Mung bean Pancakes are the most popular. There is such a variety of savory pancakes in Korea and this is one of them! What's special about these pancakes is that it is super crispy on the outside and soft with mung beans and other veggies on the inside. If you come in a smaller group, you can order the smaller portion as we did.
Dumplings (Half portion) 7,000 KRW
You cannot have naengmyeon without dumplings! It's the perfect combination. Neungrado also has a half portion of dumplings that come with 3 dumplings. Perfect for when you want to try a variety of items even if you come in a small group! The warm dumplings paired with the cold noodles were the perfect combo! The dumplings were filled to the brim with filling so it is highly recommended for people who want to try more menu items!
Bulgogi 34,000 KRW
We also ordered the bulgogi, which is an iconic Korean traditional dish. This bulgogi is cooked in a special pan in front of you. The waiter will help you with placing the meat on the pan, but you will have to cook it yourself, which is a common thing in Korea. Bulgogi is best eaten hot so we recommend you place half of the meat on the pan at a time. The cooked mushrooms and green onions are eaten with the bulgogi as well.
We tried a variety of items at Neungrado and all of the items were super hearty and delicious. Though North Korean cuisine is relatively more expensive, it is worth it to try the unique dishes that wouldn't be found anywhere else.
