Gangneung used to be the go-to beach town in Gangwon-do, but these days, Yangyang is the hot spot for young Koreans to go blow off some steam. The beaches at Yangyang are famous for being surf spots and is a location that constantly has film crew shooting scenes for TV shows. For example, GOT 7 filmed their series, 'Hard Carry 2' in Yangyang. If you're not into bustling beach clubs, go over to the Naksan Temple for an incredible view of the East Sea horizon. In this post, we will be recommending all the it-places and give you a taste of Yangyang.


Places to Go In Yangyang

Yangyang Traditional Market (양양전통시장)

The first thing to do at Yangyang is to stop by the Yangyang Traditional Market. If you took the bus here, the market is right next to the bus terminal, so you can find it easily! We recommend visiting a traditional market when you're in Korea if you want to find authentic food and goods! We visited this place hoping to find some good eats, but because we went early in the morning on a weekday, there weren't a lot of options so we recommend going on the weekend.

At the Yangyang Traditional Market, you can find dried fish and fresh produce like pine(matsutke) mushrooms, which Yangyang is famous for! You can also find street snacks like tteokbokki and fried chicken, so bring your appetite!

Gongane Gamja Ongsimi (공가네 감자 옹심이)

Out of all the restaurants and stalls in Yangyang Traditional Market, Gonggane Gamja Ongsimi is the busiest. This spot sells a Gangwon delicacy called Ongsimi, which is a gnocchi-like soup dish that uses starchy Gangwon potatoes.

Potato Ongsimi (감자옹심이) 10,000 KRW

A bowl of Ongsimi is served in a clay pot and is quite a large serving. The potato balls are so soft and go well with the broth. Gangwondo is especially known for its potatoes, so if you're looking for a local dish, this is for you!

Another Gangwon delicacy is Jeonbyeong, which is a buckwheat pancake stuffed with kimchi and veggie stuffing! The outer layer is crisp and the stuffing is soft so the play of textures is really interesting. Dip it in the soy sauce for more flavor!

Make sure to visit Gonggane Gamja Ongsimi if you want to try out local food in Gangwon!

Hajodae Coffee is a 15-minute walk from SURFYY Beach and is decorated to fit the beachy vibes. This cafe has indoor and outdoor seating, both of which are beautiful. Even if you sit indoors, the large windows brighten up the place and you can also see the beach!

The cafe's signature drink, Hajodae Coffee, consists of a fragrant espresso with milk, topped with sweet ice cream. The separate layers are not meant to be mixed but enjoyed by sipping the drink so that you get a little bit of all the layers in your mouth. As the ice cream melts, it mixes with the latte base and creates a richer, sweet flavor of the coffee.

As we were expecting to find green grape pieces in the green grape juice, we were a bit disappointed when we didn't find any, but the drink was still so refreshing and perfect for the hot summer weather.

Koreans love a good salt bread which is soft bread with a burst of salty, buttery goodness. This paired well with our drinks and was perfect for our little afternoon coffee break.

Out of all the surf beaches in Yangyang, Surfyy Beach has the most instructors and surfing equipment and provides the best professional surfing training courses in all of Korea. Whether you are a beginner or an expert, you will definitely enjoy catching the waves here!

Surfyy Beach recently opened after the beach was deserted for 40 years. The beach is now decorated with hammocks and bean bags for leisurely lounging, surfing areas for surf lessons, a bar for drinks and food, etc. No matter who you come with, it is guaranteed that you are going to have a good.

Usually, at the restaurants near the Korean coast, it is hard to find food that is not seafood related, but here at Surfyy Beach, they have burgers and pizza, as well as beer to go with the food! If you aren't much of a fan of seafood, get a meal at Surfyy Beach!

Naksan Temple (낙산사)

The Naksan Temple is located in Yangyang, and along with Bomunsa Temple and Boriam Temple, is one of the three holy temples of the goddess of mercy, Gwanseum Bosal. It is a place of great historical and cultural significance.

The temple is on a cliff on the east coast so it is a great place to view the East Sea ocean horizon. The temple exudes a server and peaceful atmosphere and there are pools of blessed water where you can cleanse your soul.

Because it is a place of such significance, it is visited by tourists all year round.

The temple itself is quite large, so we recommend you look around for at least an hour and a half. There is also a small souvenir store by the entrance where you can bring home a part of the temple with you!

Fly Gangwon has flights in and out of Yangyang to major cities in Korea such as Seoul, Daegu, Jeju, and more. They have special deals on their website so check them out! The downside is that there are only two flights a day from Gimpo Airport, but if you're not strict on time, flying to Yangyang is also an option!
