Our Review

Seoul 88 Beer is located right in front of Exit 7 of Jongno 3-ga located on Line 1,3 and 5 so it is very convenient to get to. It is also a 7 minute walk from Jongmyo Shrine, a 10 minute walk from Changdeokgung, and a 12 minute walk from the famous Ssamziegil! This is the perfect place to visit after exploring the sights around the Jongro area.

When you enter the store, you will feel a cozy beer house atmosphere with warm lighting. Although it is not the biggest pub, it still very well organized inside which does not make it feel cramped inside.

This is a craft beer specialty store, so they have a variety of beers here! As soon as you enter, you will see all the beers that they have.

They also have menus available in English, Chinese, and Japanese, so you can request to see a menu in any of these languages!

These are the items that we ordered. Since they are famous for their craft beer, we decided to order three different kinds. We also ordered the shrimp balls and the special quarter pizza.

From left to right, there are craft beers such as Gompyo Wheat Beer, Gumiho Weizen, and Magpie Porter. When you order a beer, it will come with some peanuts and shrimp chips as well! Koreans never drink without having a snack on hand.

Gompyo Wheat Beer (4.5%) – 8,000 KRW

Personally we were big fans of the Gompyo Wheat Beer! Our of the three beers, it was the softest and had a fragrant peach and tropical fruit flavor to it!

Gumiho Weizen (4.5%) – 7,000 KRW

The Gumiho Weizen was also a very soft beer with a slight banana flavor and a warm flavor to it. Compared to the Gompyo wheat beer, this one was slightly stronger and had a more definite beer taste to it. We thought that this would pair great with any fried foods!

Magpie Porter (5.5%) – 8,000 KRW

Magpie Porter had a very unique flavor and taste! This beer smelled like coffee but have the taste of slighlty bitter dark beer. The Magpie Porter has its own charm so if you are a beer lover, we suggest that you try it and experience this unique beer!

Shrimp Balls – 18,000 KRW

This fried tempura side dish pairs very well with beer. It is a shrimp ball. The shrimp ball consists of hash brown, shrimp, cabbage salad. There are plenty of sauces such as chili and mayo that it is topped with, adding to the flavors!

The shrimp ball is a bite size, round fried shrimp. The inside is filled with plump and soft shrimp meat and the outside is covered with crispy tempura. Although there is a lot of fried batter on it, the chili sauce and the mayo sauce create a sweet and spicy flavor that pairs well with the tempura.

Special Quarter Pizza – 27,000 KRW

Lastly, we also got the special quarter pizza which is the signature menu here at Seoul 88 Beer! The special quarter pizza has 4 flavors: Hawaiian, Pepperoni, Bulgogi and French Fries! Korean pizzas are quite creative and are known for having alot of interesting toppings. Although this might not be what you are used to eating at home, we suggest you keep and open mind and try it out! You might just like the carb on carb action going on with the french fry pizza!

The Pepperoni Pizza was topped with pepperoni and filled with onions and cheese! The crunchiness of the onion, the delicious cheese and pepperoni all paired perfectly with one another!

The Hawaiian Pizza was topped with pineapple and a little bit of bacon on top! We don't want to start any wars about pineapple pizza, but we do have to say that it was quite delicious here. The pizza was a perfect match with the beer!

You have probably heard of Chimaek (Chicken and Beer) but we were thoroughly enjoying our Pimaek (Pizza and Beer) combination! It was a rainy day as well, which just made the beer taste so much better! There is something about rainy days and beer isn't there?

The Bulgogi Pizza is something that you can only try in Korea and we personally think it is truly worth trying! This pizza is topped with bulgogi which is sweet and salty, and is a flavor that is loved by everyone! (Even picky eaters love this one). There were also chunks of veggies in there that created a delicious texture.

Last but not least, the French Fry Pizza! This was topped with french fries and tons of seasonings like chili and cheese sauce went so well together that you couldn't help but continue to chow down! If you can't finish everything up, you can also take the leftovers to go!

We made a second visit to Seoul 88 Beer, and this time we ordered the Sweet Potato Cheese Pork Cutlet, Hanwoo Beef Tartare, and the Buldalk Black Bean Ramen Tteokbokki. The portion sizes are quite large, so you'll definitely be feeling full after ordering this!

Along with the food we ordered three alcoholic drinks, a Gompyo Wheat Beer (8,000 KRW), a Grapefruit Highball (8,000 KRW), and a Park Narae Highball (8,000 KRW).

Park Narae Highball / Grapefruit Highball – 8,000 KRW

You might've heard of the popular Korean TV program on MBC called "I Live Alone" (나혼자 산다). On one of the episodes, there's a scene where popular comedian Park Narae makes a delicious looking highball. Ever since then, her highball recipe became very popular and everyone wants to try it out!

At Seoul 88 Beer, many people try out the Park Narae highball, which consists of red tea, whiskey, and tonic water. The taste of the alcohol isn't very strong, so many people enjoy drinking it as it is sweet and refreshing.

Next, we tried the Grapefruit Highball. This also didn't have a very strong alcohol taste, so it was refreshing as well! If you like sweeter cocktails,  you'll enjoy this!

Hanwoo Beef Tartare (150g) – 35,000 KRW

Beef Tartare is very popular as a drinking snack. It's a bit more expensive than the other dishes, but the chewiness of the meat goes perfectly well with the drinks.

When you mix the egg yolk on top with the beef tartare, it creates an even more savory flavor. You can also eat it with the slices of pear on the side, adding a touch of sweetness and crunchiness to it.

Sweet Potato Cheese Pork Cutlet – 11,000 KRW

Next, we tried the Sweet Potato Cheese Pork Cutlet. This dish was a flavor explosion of sweet potato, pork, and cheese wrapped up in a perfectly-fried coating. It was delicious! Even with such a variation of flavors, it didn't taste weird as they all complemented each other well!

It's best to cut the pork cutlet and have each bite with a little bit of every flavor in it!

Buldalk Black Bean Ramen Tteokbokki – 12,000 KRW

One of the most popular ramen brands in Korea is Fire Noodles, or 'Buldalkbokkeumyeon' (불닭볶음면). This dish is a combination of the spicy flavor of Fire Noodles and black bean tteokbokki. I was surprised at how delicious this combination was!

It wasn't nearly as spicy as the original Fire Noodles, but just had a bit of a kick to it, so it wasn't difficult to eat. On top of that, the ramen noodles and chewy rice cakes added more texture, flavor, and fun to the dish!

These three dishes went really well with one another! The portions sizes were quite large too, so we left feeling pretty full. If you want to grab a drink with friends to end the night, Seoul 88 Beer is the perfect place to do so. It's not too expensive and there are lots of drinks to choose from, so you won't be disappointed!

Outdoor seating is available from 21:00 so you can enjoy your beer on the patio, too!
