Our Visit

This natural tie dye center in Incheon has many activities that can be done with family members or with friends! You can also get souvenirs to take home with each piece.

The instruction Esther Lee is an expert in natural dyeing and is also outstanding in making hanboks as well! Inside the shop, you can find many hanboks and can be purchased or made to order as well.

The activity that we are going to try today is to dye the natural silk scarves that are like silk fabrics. The paper explaining the process is all written in Korea, however the instructor can speak in English so you do not have to worry about a possible language barrier.

Aprons and plastic gloves are also available. You do not have to worry about the dye getting stained on your clothes or getting on your nails! Let's get started!

Every step of doing it is always shown by the instructor first so you can follow it without making mistakes. The first step is to sprinkle the water on our satin fabric and roll the fabric into lumps at different corners.

When the cloth is finished, we will move the fabric to put it in the box to prepare for dyeing in the next step.

Dyeing is done by mixing natural pigments with warm water to make the default color or base color. The powder used is a cochineal powder and is made from the fine grinding of cochineal insects. The cochineal powder is considered a popular natural red dye as well.

Once we have the base color, the instructor tested the acid base for us to see if our initial color was neutral.

Afterwards, the teacher then added the basic color in other glasses to make other colors.

The first glass that we will make is to mix a natural powder into it.

This powder results in the color becoming more intense, almost black. This is because the powder changes the acid-base value of the color itself.

Another way to prepare dark colors is to mix the iron powder and cochineal powder. When that happens, the color that comes out will be a purple color.

Once we have all the colors ready, it's time to dye our scarves. The method of dyeing we will use is to scoop the paint and pour it on the spot where we want it. We can choose by ourselves how much we want and what color.

When it is done, we will let the fabric absorb the color. While we are waiting for the scarf, the teacher suggested that we try to dye the shirt together.

Dyeing the shirt is very easy. In the first step, we will shape the shirt as we want on the tray prepared for pouring paint. We have made a knot by turning the middle. This method will cause a storm pattern.

When the shirt is ready, we moved to the terrace portion of the restaurant where we come to a table filled with dyeing tools and a pot of dye.

The color that we decided to do was blue. However, since this place only uses natural colors, it will look sort of green.

After we pour the color on the spots that we want. At first, the color came out green, but when the paint was exposed to the air it oxidized and the color changed to blue.

In the meantime the instructor explained that if we wanted the color to appear more diffused, we could use a face spray to color in the spots that we wanted.

However, we ended up dipping the shirt into the paint pot. This is also another option. You can choose how you will go about all of this based on the creative techniques of yourself.

This is our final product! Actually we can turn the shirt over and add more color to make the front and back! We were really satisfied with the results.

When it is done, you can take it out to dry in the sun! When we are done with our shirts, it was time to check on our scarves.

The color came out much fresher than I expected. After that, we put the scarves in the sun along with the shirt. After 30 minutes, we washed the dyed cloth with clean water.

By rinsing, we wash away the remaining paint that has not absorbed into the fabric. You can wash it as much as you need so that the color fades to the shade that you want.

After cleaning, the teacher will iron the scarf for you to dry and students can take it home.

As for the shirt, because we don't have enough time, we have to put it in a bad and dry it at home.

The teaching center provides instructions on how to care for and wash clothes made with natural dyes in English. Therefore, you can easily do it yourself at home anyways.

Here is the final product!

This is a great way to make a souvenir and to spend time doing a fun activity!
