Jjajangmyeon, or noodles with black bean sauce, is one of the most well known dishes in Korea.

Although it is now a cheap meal, it used to be fairly expensive so it was eaten on special days to celebrate, such as graduation day.

Today we're going to show you how you can make this meal yourself and also a few instant versions for when you want something satisfying in a hurry.


How To Make Jjajangmyeon

Ingredients

400g Fresh Korean Noodles (can be found at Korean and Asian markets)
300g Pork (a cut with some fat on it like shoulder or belly)
1/2 Cabbage
1 medium onion
Green onions
2 cups cooking oil
1/2 cup sugar
100g Chunjang (춘장) Korean black bean paste
1 tsp soy sauce
20g potato starch (can substitute cornstarch or flour)

Step 1: Dice the meat, onion, and cabbage. Wash and finely chop green onions.

Add the Chunjang paste to a pan with some of the cooking oil and stir until it becomes a thinner consistency, then turn off the heat and pour out the excess oil.

Step 2: Add 1/2 a cup of oil and green onions to pan and sauce until the onions are browned.

Add sugar and stir until dissolved, then add the meat and stir-fry for about 1 minute.

Add onion, cabbage, and soy sauce.

Step 3: When the meat and veggies are cooked evenly, add about 500ml of water and bring to a boil and let simmer for a bit.

Mix potato starch with a small amount of water and slowly add to pan while stirring the sauce.

Step 4: Bring a pot of water to a boil and add noodles. Boil for about 4 minutes, or until noodles are cooked through. Strain and rinse.

Add a serving of noodles to a bowl, top with sauce, and enjoy!
