Lovestruck In The City
도시남녀의 사랑법
Did you get a chance to check out Lovestruck on Netflix?
Let's look at the houses of main characters Park Jae-won (Ji Chang-wook) and Lee Eun-oh (Kim Ji-won).
Park Jae-won:
Modern Meets Traditional
Park Jae-won is team leader at an architectural company, so maybe that's why he has such an interesting house.
He lives in an updated Hanok, a traditional Korean house.
As you can see, the wooden frame was left intact and the white paper on the doors is reminiscent of Hanji, traditional handmade paper, that was used to line doors and windows.
The juxtaposition of modern furniture and props within such a traditional looking setting creates a unique effect.
Additionally, you can see that the house is set up for a more traditional lifestyle, with furniture made for sitting on the floor.
Lee Eun-oh:
Emphasis On Vintage
Lee Eun-Oh runs a pretty newly started one-person marketing agency called O3 out of her home.
Eun-oh's house is unique in that it is unusually long.
The house itself is old, but she also has chosen to furnish it with faded tones that blend well and just look very fitting.
You can also see pictures and string lights she has hung up that don't look particularly sophisticated, but add personal flavor to the space.
Though the house itself is old and has seen better days, you can clearly see Eun-oh's attempts to make the space nicer by working with the vintage look.
It's like a metaphor for Eun-oh's life, doing her best with the hand she was dealt, working hard to overcome the adversity life has thrown at her.
My Roommate Is a Gumiho
간 떨어지는 동거
Romantic comedy My Roommate Is a Gumiho centers around Shin Woo-yeo (Jang Ki-yong), a 999-year-old nine-tailed fox and college student Lee Dam (Lee Hyeri).
So what kind of design styles do each of these drastically different characters go for?
Shin Woo-yeo:
Old Fashioned Luxury
Shin Woo-yeo's house has a luxurious and antique atmosphere as if conceptualized with a Medieval castle in mind.
The high, vaulted ceiling and chandelier seem to draw inspiration from Medieval great halls.
It seems fitting that someone who has lived for 999 years would lean towards such a style.
Aside from architecture, the items throughout his house such as paintings and vases also reflect his preference for the antique.
Woo-yeo's house is also perfectly organized, giving it an unlived-in feel, highlighting the fact that he is not yet human.
Lee Dam:
Full Of Humanity
Unlike Woo-yeo's house, Lee Dam's house which she cares with her younger brother, Lee Dan, is full of life and human qualities.
It's relatively small compared to Woo-yeo's, but it is a pretty typical and functional Korean home.
Lee Dam's home is warm and comfortable, that of an ordinary human, a stark contrast to Shin Woo-yeo's museum of a house.
Doom At Your Service
어느 날 우리 집 현관으로 멸망이 들어왔다
When Tak Dong-kyung's (Park Bo-young) world seems to come crashing down, she wishes on a shooting star for the doom of the entire world, and a messenger of the gods, Myul Mang (Seo In-guk), happens to hear her.
These two characters are like opposites and you can see it in their stylistic choices.
Dong-kyung:
Cute & Colorful
Dong-kyung's home is decorated with yellow wallpaper, giving it a warm and cozy appearance.
Also, the furniture and other decor are warm colors - pink sofa, colorful throw pillows, which add to the comfy atmosphere.
In addition, there are various items scattered throughout the house, signs of daily life filling any space available.
If you're aiming for for a cute and cozy look, you can refer to this interior for ideas.
Myul Mang:
Achromatic Stone
In contrast to the bright colors in Dong-kyung's home, Myul Mang's is all shades of grey, with some white and black thrown in.
The difference is really highlighted when Myul Mang connects the two houses.
Myul Mang's home has no color at all, just black, white, and grey.
The stone walls create a cave-like atmosphere which reflects his cold and cynical nature.
If you like darker colors and are going for a more rugged, less refined feel, Myul Mang's home has some good inspiration.
Nevertheless
알고있지만
Nevertheless is a college romance about Yoo Na-bi (Han So-hee) and Park Jae-eon (Song Kang), both skeptical about love and relationships from their bad experiences in the past.
So what does the home of a girl who has vowed never to fall in love look like?
Yoo Na-bi:
Art Student Chic
Yoo Na-bi lives in a studio apartment, but there are some key elements that set it apart from your standard, basic one room home.
The bed, you'll notice, is on a raised platform, separating it from the rest of the living space.
This step-up flooring technique adds both practicality and aesthetic value to the home.
Another notable decor choice is Na-bi's use of her own art and other art she has collected to hang on the walls.
You can easily inexpensively get this look by hanging pictures and postcards, or if you're artistically inclined, your own art just like Na-bi.
Hospital Playlist
슬기로운 의사 생활
What kind of houses do the doctors live?
We don't see them often, since the story mostly revolves around the hospital, but let's look at Lee Ik-jun's (Jo Jung-suk) and Yang Seok-hyeong's (Kim Dae-myung) houses.
Lee Ik-jun:
Bright & Contemporary
Ik-jun's home is a prime example of a newly built apartment in Korea.
It is spacious with plain, white walls and midcentury modern furniture, giving it a clean and contemporary feel.
Ik-jun's neat and tidy home is also interspersed with toys however, signs of his young son's existence there.
The bright and colorful toys seem somewhat out of place, which serves to emphasize Ik-jun's status as a single dad.
Yang Seok-hyeong:
Brick & Vintage
The opposite of Ik-jun's modern house, but still classy.
Seok-hyeong's home features exposed brick walls, warm tones, and vintage furniture.
The furniture, sound system, rug, and parquet flooring create a 1960s vibe that feels familiar and inviting.
If you want to create a similar vintage atmosphere, you can find good inspiration in Seok-hyeong's house.
Vincenzo
빈센조
Finally, we have Vincenzo, the hottest K-Drama on Netflix in the world so far this year.
What are the homes of Vincenzo (Song Joong-ki), Hong Cha-young (Jeong Yeo-been), and Jang Jun-woo (Ok Taec-yeon) like and what do they tell us about them?
Vincenzo Cassano:
Realistically Drab
Vincenzo's room in Geumga Plaza is very shabby and dated, much like the rest of the plaza.
The room is not kept in any particular style and is a far cry from the luxury he is used to, but it was fun to see him in his expensive suits living in such a normal looking place.
Hong Cha-Young:
Retro Korean
Hong Cha-Young's house is a space filled with the character of her father, with a lot of 70s and 80s influence.
The classic dark wood tones can give a heavy feel to the interior, but it is broken up by things such as the living room rug and floral couch.
Overall, it feels warm and lived in.
Jang Jun-woo:
Luxurious But Cold
Jang Jun-woo, the influential and very wealthy CEO of Babel and antagonist of the show lives in the lap of luxury.
An open floor plan with great views of the city, furnished with only the best, it really showcases his wealth and power.
The marble floors, columns, and grey tones give this home a chic, but cold feeling, highlighting the villain's duality of seemingly effortless charm and ruthless cruelty.
Today we looked at the homes seen in popular K-Dramas in 2021, each one showcasing the characters' personalities perfectly.
So whose style was your favorite?
